Tracing RAMC unit/regiment from regimental no.

I have found the medal card (but sadly no service/pension record) for Alfred Salmon during WW1. He joined the RAMC Welsh Minister's Corps in 1916 and was a stretcher bearer, apparently serving in Gallipoli and subsequently contracting malaria (possibly discharged as a result) according to family members.

Aside from his regimental number (81901) and medals (Victory and British, ref: RAMC/101 B18 p1267) I know no more of his service.

Can I use any of the above to narrow down my search for his regiment or unit? Ultimately I'd like to know where he served and his experience of war (as a clergyman...!).

Have just viewed his Medal Card theres nothing on it to say discharged and cant see him on the Silver War Badge Rolls.
The card suggests he didnt go overseas until Jan 1916 at the earliest(no 1915 Star)

The only place for confirmation of enlistment and discharge dates is to consult the medal rolls held at Kew to which the index card relates.

Its v difficult tracing RAMC lads as they were sent everywhere
Edit: Ive looked on Soldiers Died In Great War cd And tried a search with similar numbers...There are RAMC lads 817** to 818** casualties with Welsh connections and they died in either Malta or Salonika which would tie in with Malaria as it was prevalent in Salonika his post 1916 entry to war may preclude him from Gallipoli.

The 'Welsh Ministers' or Welsh Students' RAMC have been comprehensively studied by Sion ap Tudur who started this thread on GWF. See post 34 for his ongoing list. Alfred Salmon is there but without an unit unfortunaely.

He would not have been at Gallipoli as he didn't enlist till 1916. Gallipoli was 1915.


Have you goy his area of birth/wartime addresses?

I haven't found his wartime addresses, no, though I will be looking for those now in absent voters' lists as I know they sometimes give a regiment in lieu of their names.

Hi Livinengland - I know you posted this a long time ago but I wondered if you had made any progress? I am doing some research on behalf of a friend and her relative was I believe in the same unit as your relative. His medal card says RAMC/101 B18.

Did you have any success in finding out any more information? I was going to try the RAMC museum - have you tried them already?

Ah - I just learned that the 101/B18 is not a reference to unit! Never mind. All the same, if you managed to make any progress I would appreciate any pointers you might be able to pass on!

Hi Gwil, thanks for the reply. These are the bits I have so far - his name is Frank Sharp(e), reg number is 63432 (WW1 Medal Card)

What do you think? Is there anything else I can do from here?
