East Hauxwell - Francis Ellerton
« on: Friday 10 August 12 20:17 BST (UK) »
Is there anyone with access to copies of East Hauxwell parish registers who could look-up a burial for me? I am interested in Francis Ellerton the son of Matthew Ellerton. I have read that he was baptized at Hauxwell in 1666 and that he was probably buried at Hauxwell in "about 1679". If the burial entry can be found, I would like to know whether it makes any reference to the deceased being "the son of matthew", or if there is is any reference to the deceased's age or place of residence.

Hi

A popular BI has:

30 Mar 1679 Francis Ellerton, Hauxwell, St. Oswald, bur.

May also be of interest:
10 Nov 1673 Franciscus Ellerton, Hauxwell, St Oswald, bur.
30 Jan 1676 Franciscus Ellerton, Hauxwell, St Oswald, bur.

Many thanks Geoff. What are the odds of 'my' Francis (baptized 1666) having avoided those three burials. Not good, I'm thinking. I would have liked him to become and adult and have a family. Never mind. Time for a rethink. Your information was really helpful, even if it wasn't what I wanted to hear.

Hi

Had chance to look at the PR's now.

There looks to be a bit of a pattern forming, it looks like 2 families, Matthew and Matthei, I haven't found a marriage for either, however. But, there is a Catherine, possibly Matthew's wife, see below.

The 1673 and 1679 burials in my previous post are of Matthew (not Matthei). I can't see a birth/baptism for a Francis/Franciscus before 1678, since there was a death in 1673, there must be one somewhere. The 1673 burial is listed but with no other info.

Source, Hauxwell PR, (Ellerton):
23 May 1675 Anna d. of Matthei, bap.
18 Jul 1669 Catherine d. of Matthew, bap.
19 Sept 1669 Catherine d. of Matthew, bur.
23 Jan 1678 Catherine wid., bur.
17 Feb 1678 Franciscus s. of Mathei, bap.
5 Mar 1671 Giles s. of Mat, bap.
6 Apr 1673 Johannes s. of Matthei, bap.

Hi

There are a few Downholme entries that may be of use, or throw a spanner in the works!

13 July 1694 Matthew s. of George Ellerton, bur.
15 Sept 1699 Anne, w. of Mat. Ellerton, bur.
28 Jan 1700 Francis s. of Jon Ellerton, bur.
15 Nov 1709 Francis s. of Mat. Ellerton, bur.
20 Feb 1713 Eliz., w. of Mat. Ellerton, bur.

5 May 1691 Matthew Ellerton & Ann Ellerton, mar.
1 May 1681 Edward Ellerton s. of Matthew, bap.

Of course they may be different families...

The '1676 burial' of Francis relates to Matthew's father, Francis Ellerton of Barden, who was buried 30th January 1775 (Julian calendar).

There appears to have been no surviving 'Francis' from this family.

Many thanks Geoff for the Downholme entries and for all your help.

Hi "bolttail",
You might be interested in referring to my Ellerton website which includes a tree for the Francis of Barden (buried at Hauxwell in 1675/76):
http://ellerton.giantpandahost.com/Trees/Francis15XX.htm
This page includes links to trascriptions of wills for Francis and his wife Catherine. The "Trees" and "Wills" index pages provide lots more information on many other Ellerton families in the area - including those at Downholme - around this time.

Regards, Bob

Many thanks Bob, but I think we are writing to each other anyhow.

No doubt the link will be useful to anyone else who visits this forum subject.
