Are you up for a challenge?
« on: Monday 06 August 12 22:26 BST (UK) »
Hello Kiwi Girl,  I've been watching your postings for a while and see that your pretty good at this stuff. Wondering if you could help this kiwi guy rookie. If you have nothing better to do.  If you want to pass that's O.K. as well.

My fathers line is Cook. I'm trying to gain ANY info on any of his line.   I have my grandfathers brother, William Charles C  born abt 1901, in Western Super Mare, Somerset.   he came to N.Z. for a while but it seems took off. He may have left a wife and 3 kids...who are they?  read below..... from the Cambridge museum....

In 1933 Harold Keytes bought his farm in Te-Miro from the lands and surveys department. The farm had been advertised in the New Zealand Herald as 178 acres, no fencing, no water supply and ragwort infested having changed hands twelve times after the first world war.

One of it's owners was ....Bennet, and another .....WILLIAM COOK, brother of HURLSTONE whose family in 1995, were still farming in Maungakawa Road. WILLIAM was an ex British Navy man who, with his service endowment, settled until his wife and three children left him, when he abandoned the property and set sail for England. His navy influence is evident in the porthole windows featured in the homestead.

I have come to a wall with the Cooks, I have a tree on Ancestry.com and will invite you as a guest if it helps.

Tawa

You would do better to make a stand alone post for William - the chatters on the NZ board are fan-jolly-tastic at ferreting stuff out.  So if they see him, they can help  ;)

This chap may be the wrong age for 'your' William

Hi again Tawa,

Have you tried to find him by looking for his brother Hurlstone COOK?

If Hurlstone's family were still farming in the area as late as 1995 some descendants should still be around (unless this is your direct line).

Yes, Janette, .......that is his birth.  31st March 1901, Western Super Mare, Somerset.        He may have emmigrated with Hurlstone around 1910-1914, there is a record of a H.Cook departing Newcastle for New Zealand in 1913. The record has the correct birth year for Hurlstone.  William was around 9 years younger so may have come later.

To Spades.... I have Hurlstones Marriage, and children.

I don't have William Charles marriage.  Or anything apart than the fact that he lived in Cambridge, New Zealand for a time.

British Navy has drawn a blank for me.

Hi again Tawa,

Have you tried to find him by looking for his brother Hurlstone COOK?

Spades

Died in 1959 aged 66 buried at Hautapu Cemetery, there is another Cook, with the name Hurlstone as a middle name in 2003 at the same cemetery and another with the middle name at Hamilton Park Cemetery 2004.  As there is probably issue with these last two will not put there names on the board.
