Hello all.

As per first post of mine to the thread, I LOVE PP and the ease of it's search engine to use. The HANKS/BANKS thread addition, was not intended as a criticism.

As I was about to go out the door, it was easier for me to post a link here to be picked up by Goggle, than to hunt for a contact address for PP on the off chance, that they had a manual way of adding another search link to that copy, with an alternative indexing reference.

From what I have seen to date, PP has been more successful with character/type identification, than that seen on some other leading Archival sites.

Keep up the good work.

Have been meaning to thank the person..who way back somewhere here suggested using 'snipping tool' for taking snippets from paperspast (and anything!)
I discovered it was part of vista addons..it is a lifesaver.
So thankyou  ;D

If you haven't used it google will easily find it

Bye
Althea

Clipping - Terms of use - Copyright
« Reply #137 on: Monday 30 April 12 21:10 BST (UK) »
Hello Anthea.

Your snipping tool comments were of interest, so I went looking for the discussion.

With my memory not being as sharp as I would like, I copy everything that comes to hand, and have taught myself by trial and error, how to copy/cut and paste. Then transfer to an old photo editing programme [PA] that is on my old computer. In this programme I can edit and over print, and save in various formats and sizes. If copy and paste does not work, I screen dump and then edit to the content I’m interested in and over print with a source credit, so that the original copy can be acknowledged and the original found again, if I can not find my saved copy.

What I found most interesting was the post clarifying the issues of copy right and TERMS OF USE as clipped below. I must put my hand up as being as guilty as most with the lack of a detailed study of the terms of use copy.

Some people are getting confused between copyright and terms of use (which is a contract, far more onerous, easier to enforce and claim compensation when breached).

The site which hosts the images has terms of use attached, by accessing the images one is agreeing to comply with the terms of use.
If one "takes a screenshot" that is a breach of the terms of use copyright does not come into the equation.

Interesting reading for those wishing to save old images from the print media.

Copyright guide

The Papers Past website provides access to digitised copies of historical New Zealand newspapers. This copyright statement relates specifically to the digitised newspaper content on Papers Past. Additional information about specific papers can be found on each newspaper title page.
Material on this website has been provided in good faith for users by the National Library on the basis that:
•   the newspaper publications provided from the 19th and early 20th century are out of copyright
•   in most cases digitised copies replace microfilm versions previously provided to the public
•   for more recent newspaper publications (up to 1945), permission has been sought from the publisher to reproduce the material on this website
Duration of copyright in New Zealand
A significant amount of the content on Papers Past is out of copyright. In New Zealand, where an author or publisher cannot be identified and it can be reasonably assumed the author died 50 or more years ago, copyright has expired.
As a guide, it may be reasonable to assume copyright has expired for newspaper items published more than 100 years ago, and that they are therefore available to be copied and republished without permission.
Where the author or publisher can be identified, in New Zealand the copyright term is the life of the author plus 50 years. For works that are still in copyright, permission from the copyright holder is needed before copying or republishing the works, with the exceptions of fair dealing for criticism, review, research or private study.
If you are a rights holder and are concerned that you have found in-copyright material on our website, for which you have not given permission, or is not covered by a limitation or exception in New Zealand law, please contact us for a copy of our takedown procedure.

Hi Fresh Fields/Althea -

I'm just on my way out, but I can give you some quick comfort regarding screenshots etc...

Just as a general guide, aside from copyright, you won't get in any trouble for snapping screenshots if:

- Your use of the material is for personal study or non-commercial
- you attribute the material (eg, Grey River Argus, 12 June 1874, page 4)
- you acknowledge the source of the material (National Library, Papers Past)

And especially if:

- you provide a link back to the PP article if you're doing this online.

We love it when people use our material. If you're unsure because your intended use is slightly different to the above, or just if you want to be thorough, email paperspast[at]natlib.govt.nz and ask. If your usage is along the lines of the above, go forth and screenshot!

I hope this helps. I have to dash now, but I'll pop back in later, because I know that this is an incomplete picture and some of you might want something more definitive.

Cheers!

Emerson
