It's great having an obscure publication, the Maoriland Worker, on PP. Who would have thought that such a publication existed.

BURGESS (West Somerset)
TAKLE (West Somerset and Bristol)
QUICK (West Somerset)
STEAR/STEER (West Somerset)
KEEFE (Tipperary; Victoria, Australia; New Zealand)

Hi Papers Past,
going back over this post, you mention the restrictions placed on your ability to digitize newspapers by copyright, and am wondering whether you could explain this, i.e how long a period this usually applies. I have often used the Wellington paper the Evening Post, it's fantastic that it goes up to 1945, is this the benchmark or could you possibly digitize beyond this date?
Cheers,
Craig.

Hi Craig -
I just drafted up a detailed reply and then decided that it looked too much like a letter from a lawyer. Pardon me if I spare you the boring details and cut to the chase:
We sought the approval of Fairfax to reproduce the Evening Post material up to 1945, so it's worth noting that this is a negotiated benchmark rather than a simple date-cutoff/expired copyright situation. We always want to respect the rights of the copyright holders so that we can build future options through having good relationships with them. It's entirely possible that we could reproduce material after this date if we are able to secure the approval of the relevant copyright holders.

Hi Craig.

I too was interested in the reply from PP. I recently looked into PP once again to check out titles, then decided the clipping I had, must have been from the UK.

The diary noted the name Philip GIBBS, and the DAILY CHRONICLE, in 1918.

Thanks to RC we now know he was a War time correspondant. The question now is was he on staff, or free lancing as I'm lead to believe it has an impact on copyright, should we decide we want a "proof copy" of the clipping.

The opinion, as expressed by a UK, RC member being:-
"Copyright on newspaper articles is either 70 years from UK publication if he was staff (which is long gone) or 70 years from the death of the author, if he was freelancing......."

Hi Alan -
I believe it's similar over here, with 75 from publication and 50 from date of death of the author, but this doesn't necessarily fall along the lines of staff vs freelancers.
