You're the first person to bring that title up. It might be an interesting one for us to tackle in the future, but resolving the copyright issues would be a biggie...

Hi Kiwi-Girl and fellow lobbyers,

So what was in the '8 O'Clock' that made it so interesting? From an earlier post I thought it might be a sports supplement.

Whilst the 8 o'clock was a bit before my time, a quick bit of googling tells of an interesting paper - big for sports results, people waiting outside dairies on saturday evening for the paper to arrive, the occasional photo essay from events and concerts - sounds like quite a colourful read.
How far from the mark am I Kiwi Girl?

Thats sounds about right,I think it went from 1950 to 1985.

I think all the horse racing results were in it too

That sounds about right from what Mum said too.  She said a brawl at the GluePot would have fitted in perfectly among the Rugby / Racing and other Sport results.

I don't know if it was a national paper or just an Auckland one...

I was only put on to it by my neighbour who found out his Dad had been a bit of a lad in the 1970s and was involved in some rough and tumble at the GluePot, we think on a Saturday in March / April 1971.  I had a look through the Herald for that time but, as I said, got a bit sidetracked with other interesting titbits...

Think you are right Janette cause my friends father was into horse racing.  There was always trouble at the "Gluepot"

Not quite sure if it was the 8 o'clock or the Sunday News, but there used to be a competition that appeared weekly in the sports part.  They showed a footie picture of a game that had previously been played, and the ball was removed, it was called "Spot the Ball" (I think).   You marked the spot where you thought the ball was, sent it in and you could win cash if you were spot on.

Not national, only Auckland I think. Equivalent in Wellington was the "Sports Post" which came out 8pm Sat with all local sports results of the day. Very popular too. Published in Wellington by the "Evening Post".
