Hi Paperspast
I know over the years I've asked
but can you give an update on the Thames Advertiser

The Treasury at Thames does have some microfilm, but because its never really been indexed it is very under utilised
The unique thing is if you need a selling point to getting it scanned it seemed to be a much more indepth newspaper on mining matters but also general news. Also BMD notices were either put in one paper and not another..so alot of genies would be very interested if online.

I see national library has some editions from 1870 whereas the microfilm available at some libraries is 1874

Many thanks
Althea

Hi Althea - we've done some investigating of the title, enough to get to the stage where we could say "digitise it", although we obviously haven't digitised it yet.
So in short, we've done the prep, and now it's a question of finding the resources to do the digitisation work.

On that note, may I bring to your attention this topical announcement - http://www.natlib.govt.nz/about-us/current-initiatives/papers-past-collaborative-newspaper-digitisation-project-2011-2012
We've only just put this up on our main website, so I wouldn't expect that much word would have gotten out beyond librarians up in Thames.

I know that this is a bit of a cheeky segue, but the announcement was so timely to your question that I had to mention it.

I have just read the docs at that site

So is it a matter of costs? Do you need local libraries to fund the process
Bye
Althea

So.... could communities raise funds to get it done?  Is there a price guide - or do we submit the paper we want and get a quote from you guys?

Just curious  ;)

It is partially a matter of costs, and also a case of wanting to give community groups the chance to drive the material they want through to delivery on Papers Past.
I know that the document refers to "partnership with other collecting organisations", which infers libraries and museums etc - but note that we have collaborated with trust groups previously, and there's no reason why a library couldn't be a proxy in some way for a community effort.
