Bedfordshire: George SHANE, Born 1835, Luton
« on: Monday 06 August 12 11:11 BST (UK) »
Good Mornng,

George SHANE, parents William and Susannah (nee Swails), was born in Luton c1835 and led a pretty distinguished career as a criminal until he married Catherine FORD on 04/09/1858.   The family had 6 children, Sarah Emily (1859), Emily (1861), Arthur (1865 died 1867), Lizzie Maria (1867 died 1867), Kate (1868) and Charles (1877).

Charles is an interesting case in that he was born 9 years later than the previous child Kate (1868), but his father seems to have vanished in 1868, after a short sentence for non-payment of the Poor Rate in May of that year.   There are no entries in the respective Census from 1871 onwards for him, neither are there any mentions in the various indexes, IGI etc.

Can anyone throw light on George SHANE after 1868 please.

For the moment,

Tony Cocks

Extra detail for my original request:

George SHANE was summarily convicted in Bedford on 04/08/1875 for "Neglect of Family" and received a calendar month's hard labour.

However, he was a deserter from the army, 21 Regiment Royal Artillery, and I assume, though have not found confirmation, that he was then court martialled after completing the hard labour on 03/09/1875.

Am somewhat intriqued that in 1881 Catherine, Kate and Charles are boarders with Eliza Scrivener.

Eliza's husband James was in Portland prison.........another criminal, partners in crime maybe?

Hi,
There are 4 images on Findmypast for a George Shane born Luton 1845 (wrong date I know)
Attested 1869 and being a deserter is mentioned.

Thank you Cathy,

I do not subscribe to "findmypast" and am not able to follow up your findings.   However, the 1869 army attestation sounds fairly accurate.
The family can be traced through 1871 and 1881, as Waterfall mentions above, although George is noticeably absent, probably a serving soldier in 1871 and detained in a military prison for 1881.

Overall I am reasonably happy with the details I have managed to research for my PhD, although it would be interesting to find out if he was indeed court martialled in 1875.

For now,

Tony

Yes, he was court marshalled in 1875 after deserting at Portsmouth in 1874, then rejoining when he was tried and imprisioned.

Hello Cathy,

Thank you for the details........I am of the belief that George SHANE may have been with the Royal Marines.

A slightly different question if I may.   My PhD covers 4,000 juvenile convicts and being on a fixed income (OAP!!) it is difficult to contemplate extending beyond my membership of Ancestry.    However, I am considering buying a limited number of units, say 60, from "findmypast" and would ask if the details of George SHANE would in any way be extensive enough to cover his actual service etc......that is, would I be wasting my money??

If you could advise me I would be very grateful.

For now,

Tony
