Mary Stephenson, Aislaby
« on: Sunday 05 August 12 21:21 BST (UK) »
Have hit a brick wall with my great great grandmother Mary Stephenson born 1843.

She married Emanuel Barr 25 Nov 1862 but no father is shown on the marriage certificate.

On the 1871 census she states place of birth Aislaby. I have found a Mary Stephenson on the 1861 census at Grispthorpe with place of birth Aislaby so I'm guessing this is her. She died 1880 so nothing later.

Cannot find her on the 1851 census and stumped as to how I can find out who her parents are, nothing showing on the IGI.

Any help/idea's very welcome  :)

Who is she with in 1861?

I was going to suggest send for the birth certificate to get her mothers name but having typed in the name I see there are way too many to choose from.

Aislaby seems to be under Pickering district and there is a Mary Jane Stephenson born Mar 1844  :-\

Bit of a gamble.  Will see if can find in 1851.

There's a slighty dodgy one in 1851 Scarborough and I see she married Scarborough district.
Birthplace for both Marys however is Easingwould - is that anywhere near  ???

Robinson Spencer 28
Mary Spencer 29
Mary Stephenson 9

Mary could be the illegitimate daughter of Mary before she married Mr Spencer.  Will see if can find their marriage to see if she was a Stephenson before she married *

* Yes she was.  Marriage Dec 1847 Scarborough.

The 1861 census with Richard Stephenson & Ann show Mary born in Howden, this isn't near Aislably so I have ruled that one out.

Milliepede
Easingwold is near York whereas Aislaby is near Whitby.

The Mary I found on the 1861 census is shown as born in Aislaby, unmarried, working as housekeeper in Gristhorpe.

Hi Milliepede,

Witnesses were William Thomas Knaggs & Isabella Knaggs.

Have just looked on the 1861 census and there was an Ann Stephenson (lodger) living with the Knaggs family and also on the 1871 census!

Sounds like that could well be Marys mother  ;D
