Duncan Lamont
« on: Sunday 05 August 12 06:19 BST (UK) »
Hi I am hoping someone may be able to help me. I have a Duncan Lamont who married Catherine Leitch 26 April 1825 West or Old Parish, Greenock according to Family Search Records. Catherine was the daughter of John Leitch and Elizabeth Ann Aldise. Duncan I think was the son of Colin Lamont and Agnes McIver/McIvor. Catherine and two sons, Duncan John Lamont and Robert Leitch Lamont arrived in Australia on 21 February 1850 on board the Glenbervie and another son, John, arrived in February 1852.

What I would like to know is what happened to her husband Duncan - when did he die? Also, when was he born?

Catherine had siblings already in Australia when she emigrated which makes me believe Duncan died prior to 1850.

Any and all help greatly appreciated.

From Catherine Lamont's 1841 census entry, she looks to have already been a widow:

Cath Lamont (widow) 40, sewer b. Scotland
Duncan Lamont 12 b. Scotland
Robt Lamont 8 b. Scotland

Free transcription entry for 1841 from here www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Some additional family notes here. Not sure if you have seen these. http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=lamont1646&id=I13782

I note from that link there were at least 3 living sons: John, Duncan and Robert. John the eldest looks to have joined the family a couple of years later in 1852 from what is showing on that link.

There is an entry for Colin Lamont on 10 May 1843, a Coppersmith in Greenock, in the Wills & Testament section of www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. Not clear though what the document may be.

Thought that if a will, maybe some mention of provision for son Duncan's family may have been made? Assuming of course that Colin is father to Duncan  :-\  Can't see the name Colin coming up on Duncan and Catherine's children's names which doesn't help. How was the link made do you think to Colin and Agnes Lamont?
