Look Up Please. Little or Great Wilbraham. CLARK(E) c1775-1780
« on: Friday 03 August 12 21:42 BST (UK) »
I'm searching for the birth of William CLARK(E) c1777, in either of the Wilbraham villages outside Fulbourn.  Parent's names unknown.

William CLARK(E), my G G GF, married Mary HANCOCK at All Saints, Fulbourn, in 1800.   His birth place and fathers name was not noted, apparently, according to the church register transcript on CD. viz:
1800 Sep 15 CLARK [BT CLARKE] William (x) bac otp
HANCOCK Mary (x) sp otp
wits: William jun HARVEY, Chas DAWSON

I have searched around for his birth details, without success, although he was 'otp'.  I have noted, however, some Clark families in Lt or Gt Wilbraham.

William Clark died 1834 viz:
Jun 23 CLARK William otp 57 which probably puts his birth around c1777.

Would appreciate a lookup for this William CLARK(E) of Lt/Gt Wilbraham b. c 1775-1780.  (Just one note for any kind soul doing this - there is a William Clarke baptism shown 9 May 1778 to a William and Mary Clark, but a burial on 25 May.)   Maybe "my" William was born subsequently, and carries the same name?

Any help appreciated.

Many thanks.

Colin

Hi Colin,

Sorry that I can't help much with Wilbraham look-ups other than to say that Index shows a William Clark was baptised at Lt. Wilbraham in 1778, hopefully someone may be able to supply full details.

I do have an interest in Clarks from Fulbourn who I can't find baptisms for and this is probably because they were Baptists.

Mine are Sarah Clark born 1795 circa and her sister Charlotte Clark born 1800
I have been led to believe that they had a brother John who may have been a minister (or not!).  There may have been more siblings.

Some information came from a very elderly man who is now deceased and it was a little difficult to get a clear story.  There was a photograph of the brother but I never managed to get him to send a copy.

Of course my Clarks and yours probably had no connection with each others families as it is not exactly an uncommon surname.

Both Sarah and Charlotte married in Cambridge.

Best wishes,

Selina

Hi Selina:

I know how it feels to be missing a few baptisms !  Although this thread is searching for William Clarke, it's his grandson Richard Clarke (my G GF) that has been the subject (pain) of my research  since 1979.  I'm missing Richard's birth / baptism, and his father's name (Richard being one of those NPE's we hear about).  When I'm searching for others such as William Clarke, or Richard's brother Alfred (also NPE), I'm trying to walk around the brick wall, not climb it.

I've had a look for your Sarah and Charlotte, including a browse through the 'Fulbourn Chronicles' and I don't see them, nor a minister John (although there is a John Clark who was a publican).

I'm sure you've already tried the really excellent assistants at Cambridgeshire Archives.  They have so much information.

Good luck in your search.

Colin

Hello
I have searched the Great and Little Wilbraham transcripts and the only Clark(e) baptism in the time frame is the Lt Wilb baptism you already have.
