Divorce Records
« on: Thursday 02 August 12 17:40 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone could help me. I have found several divorce records for a variety of ancestors, but after receiving a quote from the Archives for how much a copy of one would cost (up to £64!), I'm wondering what a divorce record from 1883/ 1859 could tell me, and if i can justify spending even more money on the family tree?!

Hi,

I've seen a few divorce files from TNA  (England & Wales only) and bought a couple (both cost around £10). All files vary in the contents but all have the same legal forms;  one file included the birth certificate of the errant husband's illegitimate son.  However these files were from early 1900s onwards;  much later than your dates.

If the quote was £64 there must be a lot of documents; your profile doesn't show your location so perhaps it includes overseas postage.

Hi there, thanks for replying.

I'm from the York area, so no extra cost drawn from there.

It just might just knock down a brick wall for me, (couple got divorced and then seemingly had another child togther some seven years on  ???). You never know what may come up!

Hi,

If you can get to Kew then you can order the files and view them there........just your travelling costs to find.

You might find a kind RootsChatter who would do it for you - or you could employ a researcher, as it'd probably be less than an hour's work so likely cheaper than the TNA would charge you.
