Garlick and Dance families
« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 20:57 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for any information on Jonathan Garlick who married Deborah Dance in Kintbury in 1819.  Jonathan was a tailor, as were several other members of his family, he is listed in the Post Office directory 1847 as a tailor under the Trade heading.  I have a birth record for him in 1796 in Kintbury and a death in 1871.  Any information such as where he carried out his business would be appreciated.  Any information on the Dance family would also be appreciated.  I believe they were tailors as well.

Thank you

Helen

Hello,
Yes, This is Jonathan's baptism which you probably already have.
courtesy family search
name: Jonathan Garlick
gender: Male
baptism/christening date: 1796
baptism/christening place: KINTBURY, BERKSHIRE, ENGLAND
father's name: Jonathan Garlick
mother's name: Mary
indexing project (batch) number: C15534-1
system origin: England-VR
source film number: 1279461

There is also Daniel 24 Jun 1798, Charles 22 Jun 1800 Mary 08 Oct 1802 of the same parents. the 1851 has mother Mary agre 90 as a retired butchers wife.
I think that Mary is Mary Matthews  and may well be father Jonathan's second wife. His first being Ann Cope
groom's name: Jonathan Gurlick
bride's name: Mary Mathews
marriage date: 29 Sep 1795
marriage place: Hampstead Marshall,Berkshire,England
indexing project (batch) number: M01877-1
system origin: England-ODM
source film number: 88297

groom's name: Jonathan Garlick
bride's name: Ann Cope
marriage date: 10 Oct 1785
marriage place: Kintbury, Berkshire, England
indexing project (batch) number: M01824-5
system origin: England-EASy
source film number: 1279461

That is what I have on my tree, anyway. My very, very distant link is Mary Matthews.
Jonathan junior seems at one time to have belonged to Newbury Northbrook Street Wesleyan congregation as that is where some of his children were baptised.
He is in Kintbury throughout the censuses and some of his childdren were also tailors.
I have only found three births and 2 burials for Robert and Ann Dance, Deborah's parents. Ann was probably his second wife.

I would be quite happy to share my research although in places it is a bit "bitty". I was hoping that this family would link in with my 20th century cousin's husband's but it does not appear so. I do have most of the censuses for Jonathan's family up to 1881, though.

Thank you Vicwinann for all this information.  My link is through Jonathan and Deborah's daughter Rosa who was my great-grandmother.  Do you have any details of where they lived in Kintbury?

Thank you again.

Helen

Hello Helen,
Unfortunately, no, as the 1851 census simply says Kintbury with no actual address for anyone.
HUNGERFORD, Berkshire
HO107 piece 1686 folio 41 page 43 sched 190

In 1861, however, widowed  Jonathan was at 9 St John Street, St Johns Devizes as a visitor to what is transcribed (and does look like) unmarried Ann and sister Elizabeth BADER.
Piece: 1293 Folio: 10 Page: 21

His and wife's burials are no help either. They simply say "of Kintbury"

Rosa was in Cheap Street, Newbury in 1851 but I haven't followed her forwards.

Thank you Vicwinann and Dave for this latest information.

Dave I believe that your third paragraph refers to Jonathan who was married to Deborah Dance.  He must have gone on living in Kintbury working as a tailor as that is listed as his occupation on the census forms for 1841, 1851 and 1861.
