Birth/baptism John Munns, Fenstanton
« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 14:04 BST (UK) »
Hi All,

I am trying to find the birth or baptism of John Munns in Fenstanton in approx 1787. (Usually listed as in Huntingdonshire in my research) I am not able to get to the records office as I live some distance away.  I don't know if anyone would have access to any records that might show this.  I am aware of a John Munns born in Bluntisham-cum-Erith with a mother of Ann Law at about this time, but I am looking for a birth in Fenstanton.

Any help would be very welcome.

Thanks

Ruthy

The closest in Fenstanton is John Munns son of Mary Munns baptised on 1 Aug 1790. Nothing else close to 1787. (per BVRI)

You can also find Fenstanton baptisms on Freereg at http://www.freereg.org.uk/cgi/Search.pl

It looks like your chap - John Munns from Bluntisham  - may have stayed there.  Although no age is given there is a record of the death  of John Munns on 20th January 1828 in Bluntisham & burial on 22 January 1828 in the burying ground belonging to the Dissenting Baptist Chapel

Taken from the Registers for Baptist Meeting House in Bluntisham, Huntinghdonshire

Thanks both,

Re: John from Fenstanton was there any info about his father at all or if just the mother is listed does that mean he was illegitimate? Thanks for the link to the baptism site.

My ancestor refers to his birth as Fenstanton in the Census' so this one looks likely.

I think there are two John Munns one born in Bluntisham (whose baptism names him as John Law Munns), and one Fenstanton.  So this information points to that.  Maybe the one born in Bluntisham is the death that has been found for 1828.

The reason for all of this is that I have traced my line back to a John Munns b approx 1787 in Fenstanton.  On the many family trees on Ancestry all my info matches until this ancestor where he is listed as John Law Munns  who was definitely born in Bluntisham with the mother Ann Law (seen a baptism record).   I am not sure this is correct and I think the Johns are different people.  But with so many trees indicating otherwise......

A head scratcher, but I think with this info. it looks more like they are different people....need to get to the records office somehow I think

Thanks again

Ruthy :)

I think the implication is that the John baptised in 1790 was illegitimate.

Give us a bit more detail on which of his children you descend from, and I'll take a look.

Many thanks for taking a look - below is my line:

My Grandmother: Gladys Evelyn Munns b: April 1911 b: Derby
Her Father: Edward Munns b 03/03/1874 b: Broughton. Married Ellen Rebecca Tompkins 1898 Kempston.
His father: Henry Sa(u)nders Munns (sometimes Muns) b: 02/07/1838 Broughton: mother Elizabeth Foster from Bristol.
His  father John Munns b:1814 Somersham, married Elizabeth (Formerly Wright, Formerly Sa(u)nders) 23/12/1837.
His Father: John Munns (sometimes Muns) b: circa 1787 Married Margaret Gilbert 04/11/1811 at Colne Hunts.  In 1851 and 1861 Census he is listed as being born in Fenstanton. (Living in Broughton, School Lane with many of his children in same street including John b:1814.)

John and Margaret’s eldest children were: William, Mary, John (my ancestor) and these three were all baptised in 1815.  I did visit the Record office a few years ago and so picked up the marriage info and his children, but ran out of time to delve further at that point.  He had 11 children. I have not yet seen a John Munns listed as being from Bluntisham in the Census….but I could have missed it.

Let me know if you need any more info

Thanks

Ruthy
