Can't find my grandmother on census records
« on: Wednesday 01 August 12 10:27 BST (UK) »
I have the birth certificate for my grandmother, born in 1901. However, when I try to find her in the 1911 census, I draw a blank. Also, when I search on her parents for 1911 and 1901 census records, again nothing. Any tips as to where to go next?

Garethwj - welcome to RootsChat.

I'll start with the negative - we're not allowed to do lookups for 1911 on here.

However there are threads with lots of tips if you follow Census in the Lexicon:
http://surname.rootschat.com/lexicon/reflib-lexicon.php?lang=EN

Are you looking in England or Wales? Was your grandmother born before or after the 1901 census (31 March for UK)?

Many of the problems in finding people arise from either spelling variations or transcription problems, so it is best to search on as little detail as possible. Both spelling & transcriptions can be very quirky so you could use "wild cards" eg
Sm* for Smith; sometimes initials are used instead of first names or pet or abbreviated forms - Thos or Tom for Thomas for example.

We can try the 1901 for you if you want to post details.

Adding - just spotted this RootsChatters tips for 1911 success:

Can you post your grandmother's name and the details of the birth cert?

Looking at the other thread (thanks brevitas) "Canolmaes, Traianmawr" can be found on the 1901 occupied by the Shute family - the head is Lewis Price Shute a waggoner. Is this your great grandfather?
