Hi 2zpool
Your last post said that fiche lady has bishops transcripts for Simonburn. My ancestor was from Bellingham which I understand was part of Simonburn. I have not been able to obtain bishops transcripts as far back as 1700. Can you advise if there is any way I would be able to obtain them

thanks

Not BT's--a transcript of the parish records made by someone else.  You can order the fiche from NDFHS.. There is an index available to this fiche set.  What is the name and possible date?  You will probably still need to look at the records but better if you know it is there or not--and when.

I am trying to link a Christopher Elliott born to William Elliott on 7 Jan 1704 at Stackhill farm to a Christopher Elliott born at Stackhill farm on 25 Jan 1743 whose father was also William.  It is this William that I cannot trace as there are several Williams in records for Bellingham and Simonburn.  I cannot trace any children born to the Christopher (dob 7/1/1704) and was thinking that maybe there are some records missing. The fact that the names follow on through the generations and they lived at the same farm suggests that they are linked

Just yesterday at Woodhorn I picked up some photocopies I'd ordered previously.

Percy Hedley's genealogy, pedigrees and notes on the Elliott family. Seem to remember Shortflatt being mentioned because I looked it up on the NBL Farm Index.

Let me look at the copies and I'll post again later today.

Early 1700's in Bellingham parish - BEWARE. I seem to remember there are TWO versions of the parish registers. Also there is a 10 year gap which is infuriating as it's exactly where I need the info!

Drop an email to Sue Wood, the County Archivist at Woodhorn, she knows the pitfalls of Bellingham and the surrounding area. Find contact details on their webpages or phone them if you are in UK.

Another good contact is Dr Ian Roberts who is allied to the Bellingham Heritage Centre but he's a very busy man and an email might not get to him.

I've had a look at my Elliott photocopies and here is the gist.

"in 1676 William Elliot of Watergate and Cuthbert Elliot of Stackhill refused to render customary services and payments to Dame Mary Charlton"..............William Elliot of Watergate's son was Thomas Elliot and his grandfather was Thomas  and his father John........1715 "Cuthbert Ellot of Stackhill and John Ellot of Brownsleazes both voted in respect of their freehold of Stackhill"

"in the register of the Hesleyside estate 25 April 1770....Christopher Elliott of Stackhill"

There is a long paragraph in the style of who beqat who at Stackhill thereafter at Wark, Moathill and Kirkfield.   1740-1780

I suspect there is an actual pedigree at Woodhorn, I'll have another look when I am next there.

Hi Gen
thanks so much for this information -My son and I will probably visit Woodhorn on Wednesday 15 August. We are going to visit bellingham on Tuesday and then stay overnight before going to Woodhorn. If you can give me any further advice which will point us in the right direction at Woodhorn to find the information we need I would be grateful .

Thanks once again

Checked again at Woodhorn for any ELLIOTT pedigree - nothing. I checked both the Rev. Hodgson's pedigrees and Percy Hedleys pedigrees and notes.

Grr...

What I also checked was the 1764 Militia List for Bellingham/Simonburn - have a look at them! As near to a census of the able bodied men in the county as possible. Even some of the lame and sick were listed only to be crossed off again:-)

Hi
Thanks Gen for the information. maybe our William was still alive on the militia list although he would probably have been in his 50's. Do you know which 10 years are missing in the Bellingham records. We are still going to visit Woodhorn next Wednesday although I fear that we may have a wasted journey. At least we can see the area where our Elliotts lived.
