Hemsley marriage1817
« on: Monday 30 July 12 09:43 BST (UK) »
In 1817, in Nether Broughton, my 4x g.grandfather Daniel Barker married for the second time. His bride was a widow by the name of Elizabeth Hemsley. Can anyone assist me with her origins, or the identity of her first husband, please? I'm in possession of a will, that suggests to me that her maiden name may have been Gill, but I've still been unable to trace her. Any assistance gratefully received.

Have you any idea where/when Elizabeth was born and/or Daniel Barker?

Are they on the 1841 Census?

Is it possible Mary HEMSLEY was a Daughter of Elizabeth and her Husband?

I noticed this on Anc;
Leicestershire 1830 Poll Book;
Daniel BARKER, Goadby Marwood, Farmer and Grazier, House and Land
Thomas GILL, Nether Broughton, Grazier, Land

Thomas/Mary Gill are on the 1841 Census in Nether Broughton age 60

Thanks Trish, I do have the married names of a couple of Elizabeth's siblings, which have so far led me  nowhere, but those names you've found give me more to work from. Thanks again, Pat

Thanks everyone, the Barker/Hemsley one is the marriage that I already have. As I say, my difficulty is in finding out the bride's maiden name and the name(s) of her previous husband(s). I'm going to spend some time looking at the ones that you have kindly found.

In her will, Elizabeth names the following as beneficiaries - Sarah Baldock (married sister), Thomas Gill (brother), Phebe and Sarah Goodacre, Elizabeth James and Sarah Wagg (née James) as nieces, as well as various of the Milnes family (no relationship stated). You would think I had plenty of clues there - particularly with her brother's surname being given - and still I can't find her! Based on her brother's surname being Gill, I've tried looking for various Gill marriages (e.g. for Sarah marrying a Baldock, or a Gill marrying a James) but  without success. Perhaps Elizabeth was a widow when she married Mr Hemsley...or perhaps I'm just clutching at straws! I know I have the right will, as she names some of my known ancestors as beneficiaries too.

I recognise the names Goodacre, Gill, Hemsley and Milnes as local to the Melton area, but Elizabeth could of course originate anywhere. I think I'll put her to one side for a while, but in the meantime, all suggestions welcome!

Regards

Pat

Just a thought about the Cropwell Bishop marriage supplied by Mike. There was a Gill family in Cropwell Bishop. Perhaps 'my' Elizabeth was born in Cropwell Bishop as a Gill...then married a Wright....then married a Hemsley from her home village....then married 'my' Barker. Can't leave her alone yet! Thanks everyone, you've got the grey matter going again. And I think the marriage of Charles, as supplied by willsy, may well be the marriage of one of the Barker sons, so thanks for that too.
