Margarete Charlotte Lindau
« on: Sunday 29 July 12 23:09 BST (UK) »
I am trying to help a friend from Germany. Her great grandmother, Margarete Charlotte Lindau (or Lindow) was born in Manchester on 08.12.1908. Her father, Herman is believed to have been interned. Margarete returned to Dortmund before 1930, when our friend's grandfather (who is still living) was born. They have never known the identity of his father. When I try to look up Margarete's birth on FindMyPast and Ancestry, there appears to be no record. Is it possible, that as German citizens, they did not have to register the birth? Any suggestions of places to look for Margarete (or her father's internment details) would be welcomed.

I have been looking at ths on and off all day and I am sorry but I can find nothing that helps.
There is the marriage of a Hermann Lindau in Holborn in June 1/4 1899 vol 1b page 1380 but I can't see him on the following censuses.

I used all the variations of both first and last names I could thnik of. :)

Do you know Margarete's mother's maiden name?

Do you know Margarete's mother's maiden name?

The four names on that 1899 marriage are:

Rosa Da Costa
Joshua Jacobs
Hermann Lindau
Luise Schonemann

in 1901 Holborn, widowed Joshua Jacobs is living with a sister Marie Da Costa .

You can google the Great War Forum then on the Home page scroll down to Home Fronts then click on At Home, next click on Places and Infrastructure and UK PoW camps.
There may be some info on there that helps.

Thanks everybody - not sure I've got any further, but a few leads to follow up. I've been looking through pages of Hermans on FindMyPast, but nothing yet. I have some leads to follow on internment, and have asked further questions. The marriage looks interesting, so shall see what name comes back from Germany for Herman's wife.
Thanks again
