John Shaw, Newtownards early 1800s
« on: Saturday 28 July 12 17:31 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information on John Shaw, possibly born around 1801 in County Down.
He was father to Arthur Shaw, and possibly Jane and Robert.
Arthur Shaw, b ~ 1831 married Margaret Townsley, b. 1835, of Magherascouse, Comber, Co. Down, 2 Feb 1854, in the 1st Presbyterian Church, Comber. Margaret was daughter of Robert Townsley of Comber.
Possible siblings of Arthur include:
Miss Jane SHAW, daughter of John Shaw ; aged 23 married Archibald Stewart 5 Dec 1853 in Newtownards
Robert SHAW, son of John Shaw ; married Mary Sharpe 19 Feb 1853 in Bangor

Arthur was born in Drumhirk, Newtownards, and Jane was married from Newtownards, which is why I hope they may be siblings.
Arthur & Margaret emigrated with their family (two young sons) to Ontario, Canada in 1860.

I have got much information off Ros Davies site but have not been able to find my John Shaw. I have hit a brick wall and any help would be greatly appreciated.

You may know all of this but to be sure here are my suggestions
➢   Shaw family trees appear in Blackwood Family history manuscript trees in the LinenHall library, Belfast. But I don’t think they connect with your interest.  Best if you visit yourself if possible, giving them time to have the volumes available,  alternatively I suggest you ask them for photocopying estimates if they think your knowledge relevant and be prepared to pay the extra for post and packing. However if the material is really relevant when you get it, I suggest a further donation to this unique library that is always needing extra funds. Linen Hall Library,17 Donegall Square North, Belfast BT15GB, Northern Ireland, for contact look up their website
➢
➢   The volume references are
SHAW      13p15 Oughley, 21p1 Ballytweedy, 21p5 Glastry Kircubbin, 23, 30N, 46N, 58 Glastry Kircubbin, 77 Glastry Kircubbin 80 Heraldry, 90, 91, + doodle or ref ie 88 ?

Oughley is in saintfield parish not far away
Ballytweedy co Down has a shaw entry for 1720s which suggests the tree is old enough to encompass your John,  use google for Shaw and ballytweedy and the try Blackwood collection
➢
➢   Hoping this is includes new information for you
➢   good luck, Jim

Thanks for the quick reply. My visiting Belfast in the near future is probably not on the cards, but I will definitely follow all the other evidence you dug up for me. Thanks very much.

Yes, I have gone over that site with a fine tooth comb, and while I have been able to find possible siblings for Arthur Shaw, I cannot find my John Shaw. Of course there's a chance that he wasn't born or married in County Down & just moved there later. I know there's quite a few Shaws (many of them named John) in Antrim as well.

Hi,

My name is Vivienne Watson, my mother was a Isabella Shaw from Newtownards town. I have been doing research since she passed away in 1997. My line goes back to a Henry Shaw Born about 1800 from Newtownards area. I have come across Shaw's at Drumhirk, Newtownards. Between n'ards and Bangor and Donaghadee near the Siz Roads Ends. Some records say Drumhirk, Bangor and others Drumhirk, Newtownards. There is another one which is more popular now at Comber, Co. Down. Found a lot of Shaw's at Kircubbin, and Portavogie and Ballywatler.

I am to go to Proni at Belfast Records Office, will let you know what I find, good luck, not much online more a paper trail?

Vivienne Watson, Mckee/Shaw.

Thanks for the info. I think if I could find Arthur's marriage certificate, it might give me some of the info I need. Now that September is upon us, I will pick up my research again.
