1808 UK Banns of Marriage advice please
« on: Saturday 28 July 12 12:35 BST (UK) »
Hi

Not tried Banns of Marriage for research before.

Is it possible to locate a Banns of Marriage for a wedding in Devon on 21 March 1808 and if so, would this give the home Parish of the Groom who was not from the same Parish as Marriage.

If they might exist, where should I start to locate it?

It is for the marriage of John Bennett (resident) and Ann Muxworthy (Northam, Devon).

Any advice please.

Kind regards
Schooner

Devon Record Office is the most likely place to hold the Banns Books

If bride & groom lived in different parishes, the banns had to be read in both

Don't think they usually have much usefull information though -- the ones i have seen are just " Banns for the marriage of X and Y were read on the following Sundays A B C"
Wainwright - Yorkshire
Whitney - Herefordshire
Watson -  Northamptonshire
Trant - Yorkshire
Helps - all
Needham - Derbyshire
Waterhouse - Derbyshire
Northing - all

9 times out of 10 bride and groom gave the same parish - something to do with money I think ...if one was from a different parish, they paid a little extra because the banns had to be read in BOTH parishes

John Bennett married Ann Wilkshire Muxworthy on 21st March 1808 Appledore, Devon.
Aged 18years.
Ann's parents are, John Muxworthy and Ann Short who married 17th May 1785 Northam, Devon
Devon Records are very far and few between.
Looks like Ann was born 1790 and John 1787 both born Northam, Devon.
As you can see Ann had a middle name "Wilkshire"
Regards Liz

If you go on the LDS site you can put in your relatives names and they are well Documented in Devon.
Including Ann's brothers and sisters.
Also JOhn Muxworthy and Ann Short's Marriage.
Which in finding their marriage you can trace the Muxworthy family back about 6 generations, LIz :)

Hi Liz

I have traced Ann Wiltshire Muxworthy’s line back to 1709. Her brothers and sisters lines I completed some years ago, with the exception of one, which was completed last year, thanks to a distant cousin who is researching his lines from the same Tree.

The problem I have is with John Bennett (my 5th G Grandfather). He was a resident Mariner at Appledore. I cannot find his date and place of birth.

I have tried to get clues from crew lists, but the only John listed is his son named John Muxworthy Bennett, who was a Master Mariner and I have his history.

I am going to send off a letter to the DRO later today to try and locate the Bann's of marriage, in the hope that it will state which parish he came from.

Kind regards
Schooner
