Who are james Jones' parents?
« on: Saturday 28 July 12 07:24 BST (UK) »
I suppose everyone is cringing re the name - so common!  Anyway, sorry, but here are the details.
James Jones born 2 june 1801, in Herefordshire, England, married Susanna Nelson, 31 Dec 1823 in Hackney, Surrey.  They had 9 children.  I have a lot of Susanna's forbears but poor old James, because of his common name, stops with him.  I'd love to hear from anyone who may be related in some way to him or from anyone who could trace his death date and parents.  Hard task I know but thought it worth a try as you people are marvellous sleuths.

Cheers

Hi Sharyn

If you don't know James' parentage or specific place of birth how have you obtained the information of his exact date of birth?

As you say Jones is a very common surname so it helps to be more specific in a very large city like London which records such as censuses you have found him on so the last known place he lived at and that date is known.

Giving it a stab is it this man in 1861 in Hackney?

RG9 161 folio 107

James Jones aged 62 a gelatine maker born Hereford.

Hi Valda,

We've traced back the parentage via my ggg grandfather, George Henry Jones who was a merchant seaman.  Yes James was in Hackney at the time of the census.  He was working for his brother-in-law who became very prominent in the UK as a gelatin maker.  There is some confusion as to his (James') date of birth, whether he was born in 1799 or 1801.  I just put that down because it had a more exact date!

Hi Sharyn

Have you found him on the 1851 census? Does his birthplace agree with the 1861  and 1871 censuses - Hereford (the city) not Herefordshire?

1871 census RG10 3083 folio 101 aged 72 in Edgbaston Birmingham.

If James moved permanently to Birmingham and you have no evidence he returned to London then your question about his death is probably better placed on the Warwickshire board - giving as full information as possible about him and his last known whereabouts.

Two censuses give his birthplace as Hereford - is this him in 1851 HO107 1505 folio 32 in which case Hereford is confirmed. The Herefordshire board might be a better place to enquire whether there are possible candidates for a baptism in Hereford.
