EMMA HOOD
« on: Friday 27 July 12 16:18 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Sarah Hood was baptised 4.1.1833 Wolverhampton, parents Joseph & Catherine. She married Edwin Carter 31.7.1865 aged 32 in St Mary's Birmingham. Edwin and Sarah next appear on 1880 usa census living in Brooklyn NY. Edwin 50, Sarah 45 and a daughter EMMA HOOD aged 20 born England. She went on to marry Mortimer Bettman 19.1.1897 in NY. It would seem she is an illegitimate daughter of Sarah but cannot find any baptism that seems to fit or birth that I'm happy with. In 1900 us census Emma is aged 30 and 39 in 1910 census. Emma died 1917. Any help in finding a birth/baptism welcome.

John

John Hi, There is an Emma Hood born 1863 Aston Warwickshire.

Would this perhaps match?

I can see your problem as there is this ten year  discrepancy in her age.
In 1880 she is 20 then in 1900 she is 30.
There are several possible births of Emma Hood but with a 10 year range gap it is difficult to pinpoint it

If Sarah and Edwin married 1865 and you say next appearance is the 1880 US census what about the 1871 census if they were in England with Emma?  That might help pinpoint her age and birthplace  :)

Please correct me if I'm wrong but is the 1880 US census you are looking at have Sarah Carter as mother Edward Dummontt as father  ???

Is that Sarah marrying again or have I got the wrong lot!

If so it says Emma Hood born 1860 England - which fits with a birth in Wolverhampton Sep 1860 - but it also says married which doesn't make sense.

Hi Guys,
Firstly her age does appear to vary so much. Emma was recorded as aged 52 when she died 18.10.1917 giving a birth date c 1864/65. I did order 1 birth certifcate sept q 1860 Wolverhampton 6b 415 but mother was not Sarah. As for finding Edwin/Sarah & Emma in 1871 uk census no luck. Have not found Sarah (Hood) in 1861 either but have found Edwin in 1861 and he's single and not with Sarah.
As for the 1880 US census it shows Edwin/Sarah/Emma living in the household of Edward Dummontt who is the head/owner of the property.
There are 5 births of Emma Hoods recorded in the area between 1860-65 but like all RC'S looking to save money rather than buy all those certs.

Thanks for clarifying that John.

Shame the 1860 birth didn't have the right mother but at least you can rule that one out.

Any idea when they went to America?

Will see if can find anything else.

For what it's worth there is a tree with Sarah Ann Hood parents Joseph and Catherine that has her death (Sarahs) 1898 Wolverhampton so if that is your Sarah she must have come back to this country.

There could be passenger lists with information on.

A Sarah Carter comes back to England in 1897 age 64 married lady.  Boston to Liverpool.
Not an unusual name though but one to consider IF she died back in England the following year and not in America.
