Hi,
I have not been on here for ages, but I thought that I would have another dig into the family tree.
I am trying to find the parents of my 4X Grandfather.
And am getting nowhere !!!
All I have is the following.
Alexander Ramsay  b1747ish Married Hannaha Hindson in Stokesley Yorkshire 25/6 /1769.
Now I know that Ramsay is a Scottish name, and I think it would be great to find some Scottish roots.
The question I am wondering is, could I get a copy of a cert of their wedding, and if I did would it have the name of their parents on it, therfore giving me something to go on.
I am not really sure when "Proper" wedding certs came into existance.
I am thinking that this date could be far too early.
Any advice would be greate.

I think you are going to have to look into parish records. You may not find parents on the records back then. You may get a family member as a witness but may not even that as some old transcriptions just say the names of the couple and the date of marriage and not always whether widow etc.You could look for a baptism record in the parish records, you may get son of.Also if there are any gravestones/monumental inscriptions there may be info on if there are any. May be a will or some other source.

Civil registration began in 1837. Marriage certificates unfortunately did not exist before then. A marriage in 1769 will include the parish of the bride and groom at the time of marriage (often "of this parish" even if they were not from there). It will also definitely include witness names. Any other information is a bonus.

I agree with the last post that they should have witnesses on and parish. Some are n't always family members.

Dave, please could you confirm the marriage details as I've looked at my fiches for Stokesley and can't find a marriage for Alexander & Hannah.

Ramsey is also an old Yorkshire name.
Familysearch has the name back to the early 1700's.
No Alexander I can find though c 1740-1749

I did find this possible for Hannah though (sorry if you already have this);

According to the baptisms for Alexander's children he was a maltster, I noticed a George Ramsey having children baptised during the same time period as Alexander, a possible relative maybe?
