cannot find two sisters Mary Sarah and Margaret Eleanor McMahon
« on: Tuesday 24 July 12 20:35 BST (UK) »
I have been unable to trace what happened to two sisters Mary Sarah and Margaret Eleanor.
They were born in 1881 and 1884 to Margaret Eleanor Proud and Daniel McMahon. Their parents died in 1886 and 1887.There was one son who went back to Daniels family in Ireland. The family lived in Quarrington Hill.
I cannot find any record of the two girls other than their birth and baptism of Mary Sarah. They are mentioned in their fathers will so they were alive when he died in 1887.
Margaret Eleanor Proud Mc Mahon came from Evenwood and her mother was Sarah Proud.
There is a death for a Margaret McMahon aged 5 but I dont think this is her as that Margaret McMahon came from Easington. I tried census returns for follwing decades but cannot find them. I would be grateful for any suggestions.
Margaret Eleanor was buried in St Helens, Aukland - would it be possible to get a photo of the headstone. I presume her husaband was buried there too. Eleanor

Hi,  I have just joined rootschat.com because I saw your post,
John Ernest McMahon was related to my husbands mother, we think he was a first cousin but have not fully established the connection.  It seems that when his parents died he and his sister Mary (called Minnie on the 1911 census) were brought back to Ireland to be raised by their uncle John.  They were, as you said raised in Cappa Tulla Co. Clare.  The official townland is Ardboula or Affick, Tulla.  They attended primary school at Knockjames National School, there is an article on the Genealogy section on Clarelibrary.ie

Hopefully these links will be of help to you

Hi Cath
I am thrilled to read your post!
I have sent you an email but not sure if it will send. It my first time to do this and reading the guidelines it looks like both people have to have had at least three postings.

I am amazed that one of the sisters was brought to Ireland. I wonder about the other sister.
I cant find Minnie in the 1911 census - I think I might try the Ellis Island site as I had tried it before for the two sisters coming from England.

Hi
I have now discovered both sisters came to Ireland with their brother. I had been looking for them in England but have found them now on the 1901 census in Ireland.
Many thanks

Hi Eleanor,

My great grandfather Timothy McMahon was a brother of Daniel McMahon. He was born in Core, Feakle, Co Clare. I have carried out a lot of research on the McMahons of Core over the last 12 months and have a detailed family tree that I can send you. I have many letters that were sent from your grandfather John Ernest McMahon to my great grandfather Timothy McMahon. His sister Margaret Eleanor married a man from Core called John Moroney and they had children. I have details of this family including a photo which might be of some interest. I'm not sure about Mary Sarah. I have seen Ernest ask about Minnie in his letters but im sure he referred to here as his cousin. I will have to check up on this.

Regards,
Noel.

Just checked through John Ernest's letters. I was incorrect as to the assumption that Minnie was his first cousin. He mentions her in many of his letters, but does not state his relationship with her.

He seemed to move around a lot, London, Dublin, Newcastlewest Co. Limerick & finally Miltown Malbay.
