The Sayer Family St John's Margate
« on: Tuesday 24 July 12 17:50 BST (UK) »
Good evening

One year on and I am still stuck with the Sayers of Margate

I have sorted out George Sayer (1831) to the present but going backwards is proving difficult

This is what I have thus far:

George Sayer born 1831 Margate married to Mary Ann Nichols
Have searched all over and can't find recorded evidence of his birth although I know this to be the case from the census records

Father - Possibly John Sayer 1811 (sumised from 1841 census) christened 13.10.1811 died 13.07.1841
Can't find any marriage records that fit

Grandmother Mary Bently (also summised from 1841 and 1851 census)  Grandfather George Sayer
According to the 1851 census Mary was born near Canterbury and there is a marriage for George Sayer and Mary Bently from Fordwich at st John's in 1804 Also Johns Baptismal record sites George and Mary as parents

I can't find birth records for either Mary or George senior

I have worked through the available on line records from St John's but nothing fits. I have scoured familysearch but again turned up a blank.

Any help with filling in the blanks or resources that would help me would be much appreiciated

Thank you

Lizzie

Father - Possibly John Sayer 1811

Is this the name given for his father on his 1852 marriage cert?

Good evening

Thank you for the link which I hadn't seen. Daft as it probably sounds to you, I didn't think of sending for the marriage certificate in fact I had forgotton that the father's name would be on there. I will send off for that and hopefully I can move forward. :)

I really appreciate you taking the time to reply - thank you

I've had a look at that 1841 entry and have a feeling that John was unmarried.  I could curse the lack of info on the 1841 at times like this.

Re: that IGI entry - the 1841 has a Harriott (note spelling) Sayer aged 45 living in St John The Baptist Margate but difficult to determine what Harriott's relationship is to Thomas & Mary.  Copied in the order in which they appear on the image.

Thomas Sayer 50 porter
Ann  3
Mary   45 possibly not born in county
Eliza   8
Harriott   45

Good morning

You really are so kind :)

I think you may be correct re John - he was 19 when George was born if we are indeed on the right tracks. The reason I think that this is the correct family is that we were definately cobblers/shoemakers and these people are listed on the census as bootmakers or shoemakers. Latterly we were laundrymen - oh the glamour!!! I have a cousin in his 70's who has told me as many of the family stories that he can remember. When he was younger, he had an evening when he invited all the elderly family to dinner to hear their stories and wrote them all down. It feels like I have meat on the bomes of the tree if you know what I mean

That said I have printed off the information you have given me and ordered the certificate - we need facts as well as stories exagerated over time!!!!!

Best wishes
