Can't install the NBI disc
« on: Tuesday 24 July 12 14:05 BST (UK) »
My PC crashed and the nice man installed Avast on my pc. Now I can't re install my NBI disc. It does nothing when I click on install. I had this same problem with FTM and allowed 'something but can't remember what' from Avast which allowed me to re install FTM.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Why not try the Avast help pages?

Try turning off some of the shields e.g. File System Shield and see if that help. Remember to switch back on

You can go offline & turn off Avast & then try installing it.

The Avast help pages are not really very user friendly Redroger.

I have tried switching File system shield off Japeflakes, and restarting but there is something blocking it. Even clicking on what is happening with the install it says it is being scanned. Stopped that but it still doesn't work.

Thanks Jim1. I will try that tomorrow because at the moment I am pretty fed up with the whole thing. My PC crashed and was told I had virus (which could be fixed) One week later my PC returned and back to factory settings. I could have done that myself. Grrrr. Money down the drain - again.

Hello Lincslass.
Sounds to me like you have a PC problem. Maybe the best forum to get help from should be PC orientated.

There are probably very able techy members on this forum but maybe there might be help here also.

Just a suggestion.

Are you logged in as administrator?
Avast may be blocking you from installing a programme without permission.

I have tried the Avast forum. It is very confusing. I finally got logged in and posted my request. But to post a message you have to type in the 'skewed' password which I failed to do. So went back and typed it in and was told that this message has already been posted. When I looked at my profile, it then said I have not posted anything.  ??? ??? ???

I think its like lots of forums and there is a moderation delay for new posters, think we know all about that procedure! Jo ;D

Personally, I would try disabling avast temporarily while installing the NBI

Right click on the avast symbol in the bottom right hand corner of the screen
Click on Avast control shield and select disable until computer is restarted.

you will get a warning window, click yes

Avast will turn off, and a little cross will appear over the Avast icon

Install the NBI and restart the pc or ...
left click the Avast icon and click FIX in the Avast window which tells you Avast isn't working

Jenny

ps... if Avast refuses to turn off then you need to check if your pc man has given you administrator rights.
go to control panel> user accounts and see what it says against you as a user.  Personal PCs usually say administrator under your username icon, which means you have freedom to do what you want with the pc.
If it says standard user then you are limited to using the existing programs and some settings that do not affect other users of the pc.
