help with marriage please
« on: Sunday 22 July 12 09:27 BST (UK) »
Good Morning,

I have recently discovered that a whole bunch of my Sutherland line emigrated to USA and Canada  circa 1910 / 1930  from Scotland.

I am going through them and finding quite a lot of info…

there are plenty of Ancestry trees including some of them.  But I still have to find the info for myself.

What I am finding difficult is proof of marriage -  I have this on the odd naturalisation cert, which is helpful.  But I cannot seem to find an actual marriage document.

There are quiet a few names involved – but the particular one I am working on at the moment is:

George Craig Cowie.  Now I have his social security death notice.  Which shows he was born in 1916 in Canada.  I have found that this was Saskatchewan and possibly Cabri or Moose something or other….(oh dear).  I have the enlistment doc for his time spent in the Military. But would love to find more on that.  I also found a copy of the short naturalisation form.

So his details are:
George Craig Cowie, son of William and Mary Carstairs Sutherland. Born 1916 Saskatchewan Canada – died 1994 Los Angeles.

But nothing in the middle, his military papers show him as married.  I cannot find that.

Just off to Google him and then must take advantage of the sun and get some fence posts in the garden, so wont be back till tonight.

He appears to be on the 1930 US Census resident in Los Angeles with parents William and Mary and a number of siblings.

The siblings are William, Jack, Jeanne, Robert and Mary.

If this is the correct family then they moved to California between 1921 (when Robert was born in Canada) and 1923 (when Mary was born in California).

Just the marriage and his actual life without parents... would love to find out what he did ... if he had children  - what kind of work... just general stuff  etc.

Appreciate your help (mucho)   :)

(ps have sorted  two of his siblings   William and Jack, and once I have sorted George, will do the others.  Jeannie Robert and Mary.)

He's here for the 1940 Census:  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K9WG-2TK

I don't think there's anything comprehensive online for marriages in California in that time frame.

I'll try again.  https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/K9WG-2TK  If that doesn't work, just go to www.familysearch.org & search for George Cowie in California and it should be among the top results.

It's odd, because I'm sure that the link I cut & pasted was different from the one I'm seeing now.  I don't know if they're trying to do something to deter people from linking to the site.   ???  Maybe someone more tech-savvy then me would know.
