1901 census shows them living at 26 Ford streets in parish of All Saints, Birmingham. Have confirmed that this is great grandfather, wife Elizabeth and children

Hi
yes I looked at the later censuses so that I knew I was following the correct family.
John certainly had a variety of jobs and  seemed to be with others who had the same skills in a couple of the censuses.
I had a quick look for a marriage to an Eliza Leeson on FreeBMD but didn't immediately see one. Of course she may have been married before.

Don't think the John Thompson married to Eliza Leeson is the one - Looking at 1891 and 1901 censuses - John was married to Elizabeth and they started having kids around 1886 so probably married about 1885. Elizabeth was ~34 years younger than John
The John Thompson that was married to Eliza Leeson died in Canada and we  know John died in Birmingham as he is buried in Handsworth Cemetary.

Elizabeth was John's second wife, as you yourself said there is a big age difference.

In 1861 and 1881 John and Eliza have Eliza's mother Sarah Leeson living with them.

How do you know the John Thompson married to Eliza went to Canada? If it is from a tree on ancestry then they have Eliza Leeson age 23 and infant John arriving n NY in 1850.
Below are some of the children they have  of John and Eliza.
Mary Ann born Nanaimo 1856
Samuel 1859 no source
Joseph R 1860 Harpole
Ann Elizabeth 1862 No source died 1879 Nanaimo
Edmund born Wetherby Yorkshire 1867

Plus the other children do not match the children  found in the censuses.  I am going to have to take a further look at this.

Eliza Leeson baptised 15 April 1827 Harpole Northamptonshire Father Joseph Leeson mother Sarah.  This matches with Sarah and Joseph on the 1851. However Sarah is not on this census with them. Only on the 1861 and 1881 when her Mother is with them.

The tree on ancestry has her on the Irish Immigrants New York Port Arrival Records.
But then have her birth in Harpole!

I am leaving this for now, my eyes are rolling.
