Jewish ancestor
« on: Saturday 21 July 12 16:15 BST (UK) »
Hi, i am tracing my gt/gt/grandfather Isaac Davis, he is showing on census 1841/51/61 living in Birmingham with his wife Francis and family. His birth year shows as 1812 or 1814 in London (no district). I cannot find any birth, marriage or death records (dead by 1879) for him. Would the fact he was Jewish be complicating things although it does state he was born in this country. If anyone can point me in the right direction i would be very grateful.   :)

Hi,

If Isaac married before the start of civil registration (1837) then the record would be with the relevant synagogue.  There should be a death registration for him though.

Thanks for your comment, not sure if he married in London or the midlands - will keep trying.

Hi,

The birthplace of his wife Frances might hold a clue as to where they married.

Hi there,
Have you lokked at the 1851 census closely because the eldest 2 children are born in Manchester and there is quite a gap .To me it looks like Frances was a widow born in birmingham and they have recently married. In which case a marriage for December 1848 Birmingham 16/575 would fit.
Her maiden name is Levy/Levi and Isaac seems to be lodging with a Levi family in 1841 Smallbrook St Birmingham 1146/7/19/7
David Levi 40 ? y
Rebecca  37 y
Rose 11 y
Leah 9 y
Clara 5
Matilda 3
Isaac davis 27 traveller N
John ward 23   " N
Benjamin Solom 22 watch maker F
Sarah Davis 26 N and 2 female servants.
Could Frances be his second wife too an Sarah his first or perhaps a sister?
Frances and her children are living in the same street in 1841.
Daniel Solloman 60 gen dealer y
Judith 50 y
Elias 25? assistant y
Clara 20 y
Emma 17 y
henry  11 y
Esther Levi 2 y
Edward 2 mths y
Sarah simmons  16 fs y
Frances Levy 25 y

ps altough the age isn't right I think this may be his death in Kings Norton
Issac Davis 58 6c  233 as his son Ezkiel is there in latter census and Frances is a widow in 1871.

First marriage for Frances Soloman Mar 1839 Birmingham 16 317 to Henry Levy.
Possibl death for him June 1841 Manchester 20 497 (may have actually died April and she's returned to her family in Birmingham by the time of the census.)

Hi Ciderdrinker (great name),

Wow i am well impressed!! I had seen Isaac on the 1841 with another family and thought it was him but not got the connections you have picked up on. I thought i was fairly good on family history but obviously have a lot to learn. I will follow the leads you have given me it looks very interesting after coming to what i thought was a dead end. Any idea why i cannot locate a birth for him?

(nannyjan thanks for your comment)
