Also on the 1901 & 1911 census Richard was RC so I am presuming that the older generations were too !

thanks - I saw that... none of the potential matches by surname were CofI anyway. Unfortunately RC records dont usually give occupation, so may not help with the possible 'Coachbuilder' connection.

round 2 - Carney/Kearney baptisms in Dublin City (except St. Paul's), with father named Peter between 1800 and 1820 :

  Gulielmum Kearney - 1800
  Peter Kerny - 12 September 1804
  Saragh Kearney - 1807
  Patt Karny - 1808
  Bridgt Karny - 1809
  Andreas Kearney - 13 April 1815
  Brigidam Kerney - 31 December 1816    
     
All the above are RC, most in the City, but the two in 1808 and 1809 are in Rathfarnham parish South Co. Dublin.
