Lookup request - Salisbury
« on: Friday 20 July 12 12:22 BST (UK) »
I have hit a brick wall in trying to push my male direct line family history further back than 1805.
I have all the printed records, CD's of local parishes, also microfiche of Salisbury St Martins which is missing from transcribed records. His name is absent from all these Salisbury records I have and I must have spent £150 just in trying to trace this one person.
My G.G.G.grandfathers name was William Randall, with 3 different birthdates, Death. Cert 1805, 1851census, 1806 and 1841census, 1811. He died in 1859.
In the 1851c he was born in Milford, and St.Martins is the nearest church to this.
He married Ann Young in 1829 at St. Martins.
Any pointers as to possible future progress would be very welcome.

I wouldn't worry about the 1841 census DoB discrepancy, enumerators were instructed to round down adult ages to the nearest 5 years, so if he was between 30 & 34 his age would have been given as 30 (giving derived YoB 1811).

Phillimore has Milford as a parish in its own right, at the time of publication of my copy the registers were at Hampshire record office although this might have changed because my copy of this very useful tome dates from 1995.  Also in 1995 there were no indices or copies held anywhere else.  If you've never investigated this parish I would suggest it should be next on your "hit list".  Email or phone WSRO to find out if they hold copies, if not they should be able to give you up to date contact details for where they are held.

Once you've found out where the Milford PRs are held, if it's not convenient for you to visit then post a lookup on the appropriate board.

best wishes
Jane

Thanks Jane. I didn't know that Milford was a parish, assume it therefore must have had a church or chapel. I've always thought that St. Martins was Milfords nearest parish church.
A small anomaly in the updated LDS records, they list a William Randall born 1806, St. Martins, in the 1841c, another William Randall born 1811, St. Edmunds also in the 1841c. But using Ancestry to search this census the St. Martins Randall does not come up, despite a variety of search criteria, the St. Edmunds Randall does.
I suppose I've no choice but to plough through all the St. Martins districts in the 1841c, page by page to resolve this, in case Ancestry is not 'picking it up'.
What do you think?

Hi there

A******y has him as William Rasdall, he seems to be a lodger with a family whose surname too has been mistranscribed.

If you google "milford wiltshire parish records" you get a Genuki "hit" http://genuki.org.uk/big/eng/WIL/Milford/index.shtml that you may find helpful.  If no luck with Milford PRs, Laverstock might be worth investigation.

best wishes

Many thanks again, didn't occur to me that Ancestry would get the name wrong! Will check out the Genuki site.
