I believe that I am connected to the Meatyard family as an illegitimate descendant of Betty Meatyard 1758-1809 as a result of a relationship as yet unproven with my 3XGGF at Henstridge in the mid 1770s.
I know of the following variants of the surname:Meachard, Meechard, Meatyard, Mete3rue(this from the 14th century), Meteyard, Metyard,Metyer.
The "3" is Mete3rue is the nearest modern equivalent in an obsolete medieval letter, almost forgotten. Despite much looking this is the first posting for the surname I have seen, and at Henstridge too. We must collaborate!

There is every chance that Betty Meatyard b1758 is one of my 3XGGMs, the descent is illegitimate, so far as I can trace Betty had at least 6 children with 6 different partners, my 2XGGF amongst them, never married, and so far as I can trace only sought parish assistance for one of the children. Please pm me, and I will send you a detailed family tree of the Meatyard's which goes back to c1300. It is the work of another descendant of Betty.

Hi All
just looking through the surnames and came across your conversation, i have the following in my tree on my mothers "Knight" dad's side.
George Meatyard born in Devon prob around 1809
his son George Meatyard b1829 Devon married Jemima Phillips in Porchester.
their daughter Evelina b1853 Porchester married John Henry Knight.

I have the marriage certificate of George & Jemima giving the fathers name and then a census with his birth place, the marriage certificate has a witness Sarah Young and she appears on the 1851
census in Portsea with a Clara Meatyard b1845.

hopefully i haven't confused anyone

A major cause of my confusion is that Betty never bothered to get married!
