Mary Birch B 10 January 1904 Southwark
« on: Thursday 19 July 12 13:18 BST (UK) »
Can anyone help with search or suggestions where I can look next.

Mary Birch is My Aunt Daphne's birth mother. My aunt was fostered by my Nan 1n 1938 and stayed with my nan and was never officially adopted. Daphne is now in her seventies and would love to know if she has any siblings. Her mother Mary was one of 9 children born to George William Birch and Jane Parker. Sadly all but Mary died in childhood. Mary lost her parents shortly after and was alone when she had Daphne out of wedlock. Mary gave the fathers name as Arthur Dawson.  I have the census for 1901 and 1911 listing Mary with her family also all the baptism records birth records and death records of her family. Mary worked hard to bring up her daughter Daphne but struggled with her own health and finances and had to leave her daughter with my nan. Mary seems to have disappeared after 1940 as I have been unable to find any record of her after November 1939 when she was  living in rented accommodation at 11 Draper Street SE17 and was working at Kelly's Directories Rundel Street WC2.

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated as Daphne has always believed that she has a brother and or a sister.

Hello morgansdeptford

JeannieR has found a possible.

Not sure how familiar you are with Free BMD - http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Birth indexes after September 1911 also include the mother's maiden name so a search for your aunt Daphne's siblings if also illegitimate will have the same surname as the mother in the index.

Thank you JeannieR.

I should have posted to a different Forum as I have been researching my family for about ten years and have access to many genealogy sites including Ancestry, GenesReunited and FHS. However I have only recently started to use rootschat and I'm still finding my way round.
I have extensive information on Mary from the Childrens Society and they also lost contact with Mary after 1940 when Mary agreed to let my gran adopt Daphne. I know from the records that Daphne was her first child and up until 1940 had no other children.
I did notice Michael in the Free BMD websites records but I had dismissed him because of the information I mentioned earlier.
Mary may have gone abroad as she had no family apart from Daphne and she could not afford to have her back.
Daphne was never legally adopted but took my nan's surname and used this when she married.

Thank you too toastbutler.

I have considered buying the marriage certificates of all Mary Birch marriages similar to Mary's information as I think there are four records listed for her area but this could prove fruitless.

I will continue searching as my aunt is a great lady and I would love to solve the mystery if I can.

Regards.
