Europe to UK Immigrant Records
« on: Tuesday 17 July 12 12:43 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Does anyone know whether there are records of incoming immigrants to the UK?

I am looking to see whether my people arriving from Italy (around 1890-1910) would have been recorded/listed as they arrived/landed in the UK?

Surely there must have been some kind of Customs/Immigration at the ports no?

Any help extremely grateful!

Best wishes,

You could look at the National Archives Research Guide on immigration at http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/atoz/i.htm#

Ancestry holds these immigration records:

England, Alien Arrivals, 1810-1811, 1826-1869
Irish Immigrants: New York Port Arrival Records, 1846-1851
New South Wales, Australia, Assisted Immigrant Passenger Lists, 1828-1896
Australian Convict Transportation Registers – Other Fleets & Ships, 1791-1868
Canadian Passenger Lists, 1865-1935
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957

if you post some names /dates of birth etc i am happy to check.

Hi Diddy,

Thanks for your reply!

Looking for a Liberato Deciantis
b.1866 - 1874
(it's a little vague as this is part of the problem!)
Could even be born earlier than 1866... :-(

It seems there are better records from people travelling in/out long distance than those crossing the Channel...

You'd have thought that at the ports they would have also had documented peoples transits... :-/

Thanks again

Hi, I cant find him on the immigration lists. there is a tree on A* with his family stating birth abt 1868 Sore, Frosinore, italy with parents /wife /children etc. assume this isn't yours. do you have all names etc?

also 1901 census he is living as a lodger in Fulham born 1874 italy as an ice cream vendor.
1911 with wife & family no age given! street organ lender married abt 1891..  no marriage found on freebmd so suspect he married italy.

death on freebmd as:

Liberato De Cianti  march 1940 age 71 Fulham 1a /690

tree on A* has 24/3/1940

this makes birth year 1869 if right -usually given by realtives so may be vague.

Hi Diddy,

That's my Gt Grandfather indeed.

I have all the records since they settled in the UK.
However, what I was wondering is whether there are records of the moment they landed in the UK.
So I can see which date and where people actually landed and what details were recorded at that moment.
Much like the Ellis Island records for passengers arriving in NY or even those arriving in Southampton etc. from the US, South Africa etc.
I seem to be able to find those kinds of records but nothing for people say who just cross the channel from Europe (if that makes sense?)

Best
Carlo

The UK Passenger lists 1878-1960 on Ancestry, only have those passengers coming into the UK from further afield than Europe.

See the coverage here http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1518

The Registration of Aliens Act 1836, was in force until it was replaced by the 1905 Aliens Act. After 1869 alien passenger lists under the 1836 Act were  kept for only five years after which they were destroyed. See Acts of Parliament and Migration Records - the 1800s
