advise on next steps
« on: Monday 16 July 12 20:48 BST (UK) »
My Great Grandfather was in WW1
Fred Hall Born 24th Sept 1892 - Died 19th Jun 1960

I have his medal card (attached) which shows:
Durham Light Infantry Rank Private Regtl. No 4464
Loyal North Lancashire Regiment Rank Private Regtl. No 26549

Award Victory + British Medals

I also have a 'Certificate of employment during the war' which shows that he was in the 12th Battalion within the Loyal North Lancashire.

QUESTIONS:
Is there anyway to match a Regtl. No 4464 to a battalion or regiment within the Durham Light Infantry?
Any suggestions on any further information I can try and look up?

Many Thanks

The DLI number looks like a pre 1917 Territorial one (they went 6 digit in 1917) Cant be Regular Batt (1,2) as that number(4464) was issued well before WW1.
He didnt deploy overseas u ntil after Jan 1916 as no star issued
Looking at casualties 4463 Was Killed In Action in Oct 1916 with 1/6th Batt so think this would be his Battalion(although he may have been in 2/6th before as he didnt go overseas until 1916 and 1/6th went 1915 so he may have been a casualty replacement?)
Do you know if he was in Salonika?
The Medal Roll book at Kew Should confirm Batt but isnt online

thanks mmm45  ;D

Where did you find the information regarding casualty 4463 ?

Unfortunately - Salonika does not ring any bells, I dont know much else except his 1911 census and his DOB / Death etc.

Thanks

I have Soldiers Died in Great War on CD did a search on 446* numbers and Durham Light Infantry which gave me the result.
He was Charles Lowther 4463 1/6th DLI Enlisted Bishops Auckland Resident Butterknowle.
There are no other 4 digit DLI casualties close to that number.

As he changed regiments it is very possible that he never served in an active DLI battalion, he may have only been with the DLI for a few weeks in a training battalion.

He definately deployed overseas with DLI as there is the X on his card  so medals will be impressed DLI,however thats not to say once at the IBD(INFANTRY BASE DEPOT)  in France he wasnt immediatley rebadged to Loyal North Lancs.
