Soldier and Wife -Photograph for restoration 2 of 3
« on: Saturday 14 July 12 13:56 BST (UK) »
This is the second photograph and shows the parents with 4 of their 5 children. I should explain that this couple had their children and then married. It would seem that the marriage took place just in case something happened to the father in the war.Thefather loks a little older than in the previous picture and may have been taken on his return from the war or whilst onleave some time after 1915. Again a black and white restored picture would be nice as would a coloured one. Thanks in anticipation.

In photo one he looks to have the badge of the Army Service Corps and in photo 2 he appears to be wearing riding breeches or Jodhpurs so perhaps a driver  (horses and horse drawn wagons)in the Army Servce Corps.

Thank you James. A very interesting observation which was totally beyond me. It had been assumed that he was in the South Staffordshire Regiment but having a fairly common name has not been positively identified in the Medal Rolls. In another photo I have, he has 2 stripes so had reached the rank of Corporal. There was a soldier in the South Staffordshire with the same full name but was a Private but had my doubts that it was the subject, unless he got busted! Am off now to search the records of the Army Service Corps. Thanks for the heads up.

Many soldiers were given temporary promotions, but their permanent rank would be shown on official documents such as the medal card (for example my grandfather was promoted to Acting Sergeant but his rank on discharge was shown as Private.

Interesting comment. On the medal cards have found someone in the Army Service Corps with the same first name and surname who is described as Acting Corporal. Unless some futher information comes to light, it will remain a mystery as to which regiment he was in. The service number given on the medal card do not help in finding any service or pension records.
