The two Police Officers & Special Constable Day were rewarded for capturing the gang of four.  The two Police Officers were also promoted up one level.

Senior -Constable Beresford.........£ 30
Constable Power .........................£20
Special -Constable Day ................£50

A lot of money in 1879.

Agh, well of course at Albury the residents would be law abiding, that would be why the gaol was placed there, afterall any escapees would fall into the hands of the law abiding citizens and be returned PROMPT to the main gate without fear or favour  ::)   ... Well, you see ..... At least that was the 'tale' given by my late great grandfather to my late grandfather as to why Bathurst Gaol was built, so I see am simply expanding the 'concept' to all NSW Gaol locations.  Today's Grafton citizens could have done with retelling my tale .....   :(  On the other hand, Darlinghurst Gaol was built c1841 ....

So Power gets £20 and William Kaye is discharged from Albury Gaol August 1887 and Thomas Gorman was at Goulburn Gaol after having a capital sentence commuted to 21 years HL on the roads for attempting to take the life of Constable Power.   ::)

Cheers,  JM

thanks all, so much help, truly appreciate this.
there is a photo in national library of the 2 policeman and special constable Day.

Day was the man that was shot at when the gang first turned bad. He rode from Hatfield to Balranald to get the police and they in turn made him a 'special'constable.

I was thinking Bathurst the most likely gaol too.

thanks
Margaret

The rewards were substantial when compared to typical wages of the day.

Thanks Gerry,
I have that one.  I have many of the Trove articles, all I think?
They were actually looking at death sentence to start with, so I guess, depending on your point of view, they got off lightly.
