Hatfield bushrangers, members
« on: Saturday 14 July 12 01:04 BST (UK) »
Hi all,
I am researching the Hatfield bushrangers for a little project of mine.
Not a well know group of bushrangers and their life as bushrangers was only short lived. (4 days  ;D )
I have a lot of details from Trove newspaper site, lots.

Hatfield, NSW, between Balranald and Ivanhoe.
Year - 1879

What I need is a bit more background on the men.

- Thomas Gorman b.c. 1858 stockman (likely ring leader) -21 years hard labour
- charles Jones, b.c. 1858, stockman from Qld. - 14 years hard labour
- William Kaye, b.c. 1860 , stockman local to Hatfield, NSW - 10 years hard labour
- William Hobbs, b.c. 1846, ex- sailor, deformed arm and leg. cook at Hatfield, - 14 years hard labour.

I know what sentences they got but do not know which gaol they ended up in.  The trial was at Deniliquin.
If I can find out where they were born, when they died, if they ever married it will help ad to my files and background details.

thanks in advance
Margaret

Have a look at the NSW Archives' gaol photographs, possibly some of your persons of interest there.

http://srwww.records.nsw.gov.au/indexesold/searchform.aspx?id=22

It is very inexpensive to buy copies of the records and they are very nice, high quality copies.  They also digitise the record online after you have purchased a hard copy.  They can be very informative with details of criminal and personal history.

With a trial at Deniliquin, would the nearest gaol be Bathurst?

SRNSW has photos of Bathurst gaol inmates in the period you are looking at, and also records.
I'd try there first, if it were me.

Didn't know Albury had a gaol (thought they were all law abiding citizens there )  ::)  ::)  ::)

But I see it was there in 1876, so look at that too.
