I just received the birth cert. for Alice Maud Holliday -
Her parents were Thomas Holliday and Mary Ann Cressy. I know that Mary Ann was born in Rochester, Kent, but I have no idea where Thomas was born.

Thomas and Mary Ann were married 28 March 1846 in Strand, London (at St Clement Danes, Westminster). I guess my next step is to order a marriage certificate.

Does anyone have any information on these two?

Hi again,
I only have one Thomas Holliday in my tree at the moment and he was born too late 1877.
I think there could be some link there though as my Hollidays were in Rochester at the same time as yours.
Try to get the marriage certificate next - a generation further back may help and may yet link your tree to mine!!

I now have the marriage certificate for Thomas Holliday and Mary Ann Cressy. They were married 28 March, 1846 at the Parish Church, St. Clement Danes, Middlesex.
Thomas listed as 'full age', bachelor, mariner
father John Holliday, draper, living at 9 Bisterne Place, Poplar
Mary listed as 'full age', spinster
father John Duncan Cresey, master mariner, living at 1 Thanet Place
witnesses were Ann Smith, Jno. D. Cresey, E. Cresey

I have found Mary's mother in the 1851 census, but I can't seem to find anyone else. I expect Thomas H. and John C. were away at sea quite a bit.

Any ideas where I can go from here?

Hi Claudia,I checked the address where John Holliday lived( 9 Bisterne Place)but no luck there. At number 27 there is the Hepworth family,of whom John the head is a Iron ship builder. A visitor at the house is
Thomas Holliday 33 married Engineer born Yorks Leeds.Coincidence?

Looks promising - which census is this on - presume 1851.
Great if it is as this could be the right one and therefore we have the birthplace of Thomas!

Yep,1851.The Hepworth family also came from Yorkshire(Wakefield)

I don't think that the Thomas Holliday at 27 Bisterne Place is the one, though it is quite a coincidence! I think I found this Thomas Holliday on the 1861 census - and he is married to someone named Ann. My Thomas's wife is in the 1851 census with her family, and her occupation is listed as "receiving money from her husband who is a steward on an Indiaman".

I did find a Thomas Holliday on the GRO index who died in South Stoneham, Hampshire in 1873 (age 53), so the age is about right. South Stoneham is where his wife Mary was living at the time of the 1871 census - listed as a Chief Steward's Wife. In the 1881 census Mary is listed as a widow.

I have found reference to records of British Mariners at Kew. I guess I will have to look there to find Thomas.
