1851 Census - Poplar, London - Halliday
« on: Monday 23 May 05 21:16 BST (UK) »
I am looking for a Mary A Halliday (or Holliday), born around 1831 in Rochester, Kent. She had a daughter Emily, born at sea around 1849. Subsequent children were born in Poplar, so I am hoping that she is there in 1851.

The family was at sea again in 1861 (can't find them in a census, and son Arthur born 1861 at sea), and living in Hampshire in 1871.

Any information on Mary and her family would be a great help.

Hi Cyokeeffe
I have several Hollidays/Hallidays in my tree from Rochester, Kent from around this time.
Is Mary A Halliday her maiden name or her married name - also what is the name of her husband please?
If you can tell me more about her, her children, etc , I will look through my Hollidays/Hallidays and give you what I have.
Claudia

Halliday is Mary's married name. I haven't figured out her maiden name yet. I have a guess about her husband - but only a guess at this point - I am hoping that the census can confirm that her husband was John Halliday, born 1831 Scotland. The 1861 census shows a John Halliday at sea, age 30 and married. With two of their children born at sea, it seems like a good possibility.

As for their children, here is what I have:
Emily, born 1849 at sea
Alice M., 1855 Poplar, London
Mary J., 1858 Poplar
Florence, 1860 Poplar
Arthur A., 1861 at sea
Ada E., 1864 at St. Botolph's, London

The 1881 census shows Mary born in 1828 in Rochester, widow, living with her daughter Alice (Caines) in West Ham, Essex.

Hi,
I've had a look but all of the Holliday/Hallidays around that time in my tree were born in Rochester, Kent.  If your John Halliday is the husband and he was born in Scotland, I cannot help at this time, sorry,

The Scotland connection was a red herring after all - Mary Holliday is listed on the census as porter's wife (MS). The John Holliday that I found was a captain - definitely not a match.

Looking at FreeBMD, it appears that Emily (born 1849) may have been christened in Greenwich, Kent, but I would hate to order the birth cert. when I'm not even sure that it's the right Emily!

If you get a birth certificate for one of the children it will give both parents names and the mothers maiden name.

Hi again,
Take your pick of one of these - I think you will have to apply for one of Emily's siblings to get the real names of the parents before you can apply for the one you think is Emily.  Then when you aplly for Emily's you can state you only want it if the parents match.

Alice M Holliday Sep 1854 Poplar 1c/587
Mary J Holliday Mar 1858 Poplar 1c/640
Florence Isabel Holliday Dec 1859 Poplar 1c/642
Ada Eleanor Holliday Mar 1864 London City 1c/73

When you know the parents names for sure, let me know and I'll re-look at my Holliday/Halliday info for you,
Good luck,
Claudia
