Jewish name changes
« on: Wednesday 11 July 12 13:14 BST (UK) »
Hello ~ Hope this is the right board on which to ask this question

I am researching a Jewish family (Solomons).  One of the sons, Leopold, changes his name to Saunders sometime between his marriage to his second wife (Agnes)  in 1916 and an appearance on the Electoral Registers in 1919. His death cert states his name as Saunders but his Will notes that he was formerly known as Solomons.  The family also, just to confuse the issue further, have adopted the original maiden name of his second wife as a sort of double barreled name, that they sometimes used as a second/third Christian name and sometimes as part of the surname.  Further to this conundrum, Agnes had a son by her first marriage (William Taylor) who, between 1916 and 1935, sometimes used the new name Saunders and sometimes referred to himself as Taylor ~ for instance his marriage and birth of his children were registered as Taylor but his Electoral Reg entry was as Saunders, he also started to refer to himself as Jack rather than William.  He emigrated to SA in the late 1940s as a Saunders along with his family and elderly mother.

Now that I've confused you all ~ here is my question ~ does anyone know of where any (if at all) records might be held of such name changes or did Jew who wished to  "Anglocise" their names sometimes just start referring to themselves under this new name which then eventually became "official"

Thank you
Margaret

I do not know of any central records and I believe most of these name changes were just the new name used in everyday life.

I my wifes tree the name change is Levi to Salter around 1907 in London. I have not been able to find any records but that it also conincided with a move to a new house.

Sometimes name changes were announced in the London Gazette.

http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/

Unless they did it offically by deedpoll (not sure if these records are kept) people could legally call themselves anything provided it wasn't for illegal purposes or cause offence

I've found one or two name changes in the London Gazette - in this case at a later date & changing a German name. The National Archives has a guide which refers to press notices as well as the gazette as possible ways to find deed polls as well as other facts:

Thank you :D ~ thought that perhaps they may just have started using a new name without any official papers etc.

Tried the LG and Nat Arch previously and nothing there  :-\

I too had the same trouble with my Jewish ancestors, changing not only their surnames but christian names as well  ::)

Have even paid for the London Synagogue records to be searched but  found very little further back  :(

Thank you Patrish :) ~ I remembered something on WDYTYA about Jewish name changes and that's why I posted the question.  No one else in his family seems to have altered their names (brothers or sisters), nor his daughter by his first marriage.  ~Its taken me far to many years than I care to remember  to track them down due to these name changes and satisfying though it is to have found them ~ there are still a couple of deaths to find to finish off the story but they are in SA .................... :-\

My husbands Jewish ancestors seemed to use whatever name though thought they would at time......the certificates reveal many differant names used.
I also bought books of records to try to help me...helped at bit and I did discover that quite often when a Jewish person married a Gentile they often gave that person a jewish name..we have a Louise Garnham who married as Sarah Israel!!

There are instances German sounding Jewish names in Scotland being changed around the time of the Great War.
