Grosvenor House Fountain Place Mitcham
« on: Tuesday 10 July 12 11:20 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Does anyone know if Grosvenor House still exists? My o/h had an ancestor living there in 1881. I have a note written by o/h's grandmother describing it as very beautiful.

Am hoping to visit Mitcham soon to search for ancestors in the Anglican church cemetery which I believe may be called St Peter and St Paul?

Any local knowledge about Grosvenor House would be greatly appreciated :)

Many thanks

Ecila

I have quite a few books on the history of Mitcham, I'll have a check to see if the place still exists, also yes it is St Peter & St Paul.

Thank you - that would be great. Ancestor is g-g-g-grandfather William Lewis, a market gardener (born about 1818 - died about 1894). It would be lovely to know anything about the house. (O/h's grandmother also said William Lewis had a butler although I couldn't find any evidence of this in censuses.)

Thanks again. :)

No problem, my GGG Grandfather was a Market Gardener in Mitcham too, Edward Abrehart.

Bear with me tho, I'm useless at remembering things I posted on here by the time I get home from work!

No local knowledge but a bit of digging around the censuses and google maps  :)

In 1901 part of the enumarator's route was Western Road, Fountain Place, Westfield Lodge in Western Road, Lewis Road etc.  Westfield Road and the houses at the back of the Gas Works were also part of his route

Those marked in red still eist, but I can't see Fountain Place.

I noticed that in 1881 William Lewis is shown as a Market Gardener & Brickmaker occupying 150 acres, employing 20 men, 15 women & 8 boys

I wonder if Lewis Road was named after him?

Hi

Have just taken a more careful look at the 1881 census! Thanks for pointing that out Linda. Will definitely make time to visit Mitcham.O/h's grandmother also wrote about his fine headstone in Mitcham churchyard.

Makes a change to find an ancestor who seems well-off :)

I have a 1925 directory of Mitcham, there's 2 cottages called Fountain Cottages in Western Road, also there's Fountain Road off Western Road and also Fountain Place which ran from Western Road to Portland Road.

I'll dig out the old maps when I get home too.
