Hevey/Heavey/Heavy
« on: Monday 09 July 12 15:34 BST (UK) »
My wife's family has just started their research and I am helping as much as I can.  We have traced her family back to James Heavy born September 2, 1864 in Enniscorthy, County Wexford.  His parents are listed as Patrick Heavy and Catherine Byrne, information we found on both Ancestry and FamilySearch. We have no other information.

James apparently emigrated to the US in 1884, arriving on the Servia in New York.  We think we have found him in Baltimore Maryland in 1885 through a directory we found on Ancestry.  The information in the directory is consistent with family information.  James is listed in the directory as Heavey until about 1906 at which time his name is changed to Hevey.  This is the way my wife's grandfather spelled his name.  James death certificate indicates his parents to be Patrick Heavey and Catherine Byrne.

Looking for anything that could help trace the line back further, including marriage information, siblings, parents, etc.

Thanks!!

Here are the details of that extracted birth record :

  Name: James Heavy
  Birth Date: 02 Sep 1864
  Birthplace: 0710, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford
Parents : Patrick Heavy & Catherine Byrne

There's one additional clue included - the 0710 in the 'address'. This is the page number for the birth in civil records, so corresponds to an entry on the BMD Index as follows :

  Name: James Heavy
  Registration district: Enniscorthy
  Event type: Birth
  Year: 1864
  Volume: 14 / Page: 710

You can use these references to order a research birth cert from the GRO which will add a few more details on the family. i.e. father's occupation, a more detailed location - possible a street name, or if they lived outside the town, then the name of the townland the family lived.

Patrick & Catherine would likely have been married before the start of full marriage registration in 1864 (assuming they were RC), so records of their marriage and any earlier children would require research of parish records. Records for a very small number of Co. Wexford parishes are available as transcripts on the pay-website at RootsIreland, but they dont have any for Enniscorthy yet.

Thanks so much for the information.  Being a new comer to Irish genealogy, I need some clarification.  What is GRO, and do they have a website and what is RC?  Since starting this a week or so ago, I have learned much about Ireland, but still do not know what these items may be.

Thanks again!

Welcome to Rootschat

Here is the site for the General Records Office, Ireland (GRO) http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,498742.0.html

and RC means (in this case)  Roman Catholic.

good luck

Received the birth certificate information from GRO.  Information includes the following:

Name and Dwelling of Father - Patrick Heavy Mill Park
Name and maiden Surname of Mother - Catherine Heavy formerly Byrne
Profession of Father - Miller
"Signature, Qualification, and Residence of Informant" - "x The mark of Anne Byrne Grandmother present at Birth Templeshannon"

This is not all of the information, however, I do have some questions about this.  Does anyone know where Mill Park is?  I found a short section of roadway in Enniscorthy identified as Mill Park Road.  It is all commercial, however, in 1864 it may have been different.

Also, what type of mills where in Enniscorthy at the time.
I am assuming Anne Byrne is Catherine's mother.  I am also assuming that Templeshannon is the place of residence of Anne.  Did the temple at that time house widows, etc.?

If anyone has any information on the family Byrne that has Anne as a mother and Catherine as a daughter who is married to Patrick, we would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!

Templeshannon is the name of the section of Enniscorthy town that is to the east of the river Slaney. It's also the name of a townland and the civil parish.

The section of the town on the west of the river, which includes the centre of town, is in St. Mary's civil parish.
