Death at Sea 1932
« on: Monday 09 July 12 14:33 BST (UK) »
I am searching for any newspaper reports about the death of James Smellie age 40- he reportedly went overboard on his way to Ireland in 1932. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Smary,

Welcome to Rootschat !!!

Have you been able to get his Death Certificate ?  It would not give you much information, other than where he perished.  I managed to find my g, grandfather's certificate which told me that the boat went down between Grimsby and Caernarfon.

I have searched the Death index and found

July - Sept.1932
James Smellie .  40
Holyhead
REF.11b 559

You may already have this, if not you can order it online at
www.gro.gov.uk at a cost of £9.25

I forgot to add that this was the only death from 1930 -1934 for a James Smellie + Port

Thank you for the quick reply.  To answer your question no I haven't got the death certificate as I am trying to find the information for an elderly neighbour.   It was his father and, of course, because of the circumstances it was never spoken about.   I suspect he jumped, he was in the first world war and my neighbour thinks he could have suffered some sort of post traumatic stress.
