Carney and McGough marriage abt 1864
« on: Sunday 08 July 12 17:42 BST (UK) »
Robert Carney married Ann McGough August 1864 or 1865, Burriscarra parish, Balla District. The witnesses were Maria Kelly and Patrick McGough.
They are probably the couple in the 1901 census living Aghagower North, Mayo.

I am trying to find the link to their parents. There are differences in the church and civil digital transcripts; difference in spelling of Carney, dates of marriage and parents given names.
I believe this may be the Ann McGough (b abt 1848 in Castlebar), daughter of Patrick McGough and Anne Ronane.
I also believe the witness Patrick McGough was her older brother born about 1840, but it is possible he was her father.

I would like to complete the connection. Any ideas on how to connect this couple to their parents would be appreciated.

Hello,

are the differences between the two transcripts? Do you have a copy of the original certificate from GRO?

I do not have the original GRO certificate

Here is what I have:
The certificate from RootsIreland.ie:  24 August 1865, Robert Carney, Anne McGough, RC, Fathers were Carney and McGough

From Mayo Family History Centres (Office of Genealogy records of County Mayo): 27August, Robert Kearney, Anne McGough, Fathers were Mick Kearney and Mick McGough (I believe this given name should be Pat), marriage in Burriscarra Parrish, Wife's address is Dearleash West, Wife's age 18, husbands age 25 and address Triangle

Both have the Witness as Patt (Patrick) McGough and Mary Kelly

From my past experience, I found names to vary greatly in spelling and the parents given names were sometimes incorrect; therefore, I have tried to get other supporting records. In this case, the birth record of Anne is very close to a match and the 1901 census, for Robert Carney and Anne, appears close.

Hi again,

you also said that the year varied. According to Family Search Michael Carney was born August 1865.

Family Search shows the civil marriage as Robert Kearney

As you say, spellings vary. The copy of the certificate from GRO may be more accurate - but then again  :-\

I can't see a townland called Deerleash West but there is as Devleash West in Ballintober civil parish.
Griffiths Valuation shows McGow in that townland.
Burriscarra parish adjoins Balllintober parish but there are no McGough/Gow there.

Re 1865: I guess that is the first son of Robert and Anne. I believe they had 8 children, from 1865 to 1886 (names in order of birth: Michael, Mary, John, Patrick, Bridget, Anne, Thomas and Catherine)

Yes, I show the same name in the civil marriage. However, the other records including having the same witnesses would indicate spelling variations of Carney and Kearney. I guess the original would be needed to see why this variation could have occurred.

I guess I should mention that Anne McGough was born near Castlebar in Mount Gordon. The birth home stayed in the family until about 1900.
There were 4 Anne McGoughs born between 1843 and 1848.
None had a father with given name initial of M (three J, One A, and Patrick).

My Anne was born to Patrick. Of course, I am trying to complete the link between Anne McGough Carney and my Anne McGough. Hope I didn't confuse the issue by saying Anne McGough Carney was born in Mount Gordon.

I would imagine that the spelling was according to the scribe and if people were not literate then it wouldn't be challenged.

That's good that you have the information re the house near Castlebar as the McGow man was a Michael.

Michael Carney shows in Griffiths in Forkfield or Gowel (as census) and on a map, The Triangle is close to this place.
