Joesph Thornton

???I have been searching Joseph for months just keep hitting brick walls, what I have so far is..the Parish
Marriage records which state he was 35 if this is correct then he was born 1779, this also states he married Ann Smith (from Church Fenton) age 30 on the 21 Mar 1814   The last Census he appeared on was 1841 but I can not find any trace of his death which must been in the 1840's as on 1851 Ann his the head of the family, He married & lived at Sherburn in Elmet West Yorkshire, I have been through parish records and found nothing.  I would be most grateful for a lead to follow or some info that he did exsist.

I don't know if this could be him but on the LDS Familysearch site there is the death of a Joseph Thornton who was buried 2nd October 1846 at Huddersfield aged 67, making his birth year 1779, same as what you have.....

There is also a birth for a Joseph Thornton christened 23rd Dec 1785 at Darrington which is about 13 miles from Church Fenton and about 11 miles from Sherburn in Elmet.

I have not searched these Joseph's but I would think he died in Sherburn in Elmet as Ann was still there on the 1851 Census. in the early dates Sherburn in Elmet was in Barkston Ash parish then it changed to Tadcaster and at some point was connected to Garforth...OH FOR A CRYSTAL BALL!! I will follow the 2 that you have given me and let you know what I find.  Many many thanks for your time and searches

Hi Helena,

I have the parish registers for Sherburn in Elmet -- but I cannot see your Joseph's baptism recorded in those.

It maybe that he was from elsewhere and moved into that parish.

HOWEVER -- I notice from the marriage records that he married an Ann Smith in 1814, who was aged 30 - and that marriage IS recorded in the Sherburn records - (as you have said).

If your Ann Smith was born in 1784, which is suggested by her age at marriage -- she may have been one of the daughters of a Gustavus Smith and Mary Branfoot.

Gustavus and Mary are my ancestors - and he was a Foundling baptised at the London Foundling Hospital in 1757. I have obtained his records from the London Metropolitan Archives -- hence if you think this may be your Ann's father, please feel free to send me a private message and I can give you the information I have about him.
