Census search by address
« on: Thursday 05 July 12 20:50 BST (UK) »
Hi there

I'm sure others have asked this question before, but is it possible to do a a census search by address?

I am interested to learn about the changing fortunes of a now demolished country house.  I presume I need to insert the house name and census date into some sort of   a search engine. Where should I begin my search?
I am a member of Ancestry by the way.

Many thanks in advance.

If it was a named country house then it may be possible to find the names of the occupants from the directories of the area, http://www.historicaldirectories.org/hd/ and then look for them in the census. Knowing the area it might be found from the  the description of he enumeration district

Enter the county and parish in the search box, the property may lie in different districts in the different census returns but each district has a description you can view to work out what area the enumerator covered. Each district can be searched page by page, I have some ancestors from a relatively small town and copied the images from 1841-1901 for the entire town and plotting how the varied families moved around.
