Hi Margaret

First, the Memorial inscriptions St Olaves Church Yard compliers say 25 % of the gravestone MI's are unreadable through erosion!

This is not MI of a William Hall 1828 age 58 in St Olaves graveyard or Plaque inside the church.

The St Olaves Burial register 1828

page 115
entry 917
"10 June 1828 William Hall aged 58, abode Walmgate -outside, (outside the gate?) York, curate George Hogson"

There is only one Hall epitaph MI

Richard Hall of this city, courier who died Nov 4 th 1808 age 28 years
(Burial register entry say Nov 6th 1808 Richard Hall age 28  abode Fossgate York)

Robert brother of the above died Feb 6th 1--- age 6

(Burial register says Feb 8 th 1794 Robert Hall died age 6 years)

http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/tourism/whattosee/shoppinginyork/754672.Fossgate___Walmgate/
.........................................................................................................................
The newspaper Leeds Intelligencer 20th March 1828
says

Deaths
"On Saturday, much Respected, aged 58, Mr W'm Hall Woolstaple. formally a Hatter of this Town" (Leeds)
QU!
You say Willaim address in the Will 1828 was Leeds! BUT was that Williams address the year he wrote his Will -not the  year of his death residence.

Without the Father of (William sr d 1828 ) Will/probate also his death/burial year, there is bits of good info! but not enough to say anything certain Yet.

All you have is William's circa birth year 1770 from 3 life event ages and year of but not place of birth.?

Like looking for Adam Ant in an ants nest  :( with all these Hall's

I'm only 75% on the burial in York being Your William

Best I can do for you :-\

Good hunting :)

My thoughts are

The 1770 baptism Shipley in Bradford William ~Father Thomas Hall is most likely your William

Thomas death 1838 aged  86 of Bowling Bradford and quit usual to set sons up in business before their death thus not all sons are mentioned in Wills as was the case my Great Grandad

Thomas Hall dad could have been a man of modest means as a Hatter and William could have made the business bigger in Briggate taking over from his father.

We have Thomas Hall in 1826 a hat manufacturer in late of Sheffield meaning he came from another town/city and a Thomas Hall in Leeds Briggate with son William 1814/15 with outletsshops in York and Sheffield maybe?

Through business these Hall's did move around as Willam's marriage 1799 In Cumbria
York to Leeds would be travelled in 2 hours by stagecoach on the old York road

This is  speculation on Thomas!~ had Thomas Hall born 1751 been a younger man as Hatter in Sheffield
or elsewhere he would have shown up on later census or trade directories after 1826. Thus this makes me think it was William's dad.

Taken back to Shipley/Bowling Bradford as a family grave of his wife maybe.

Hi Dave
These Halls are getting more complicated. School holidays are on here and I have been busy doing my nanna duties. Ken went to the Genealogical Society yesterday and came up with these results:
Fom Leeds Intelligencer
1793 James Daniel, patent hat maker from Stockportopened a warehouse near Red Bull Inn Leeds
1794 Daniel Hall & co patent hat warehouse Briggate
1795 William Hall & co on the bridge (j Daniel was bankrupt in 1795)
Leeds Directory
1797 & 1798 Hall & co patent hat makwers bridge
1800 Hall & co patent hat warehouse, Briggate
1807 Hall & co patent hat warehouse Briggate (Hall William volunteer Amen Corner)
1809 Hall, William, hatter & woolstapler, Briggate
1814 1815 Hat Manufacturers: Hall, William, 91 Briggate;Woolstapler, Hall, Thomas, 91 Briggate
1817 Hall, William, hatter & woolstapler & agent to the LondonUnion Fire Office, 91 Briggate; Hall, Mary, straw hat maker, 91 Briggate
1818 1820 Commercial Directory: Woolstapler,Hall, William, 91 Briggate; Hatters:Hall, William, 91 Briggate
1820 Baines  Woolstapler, Hall William, Queens Court, Call Lane (printer:Wm Headley, 91 Briggate) was woolstapler in Lands Lane in 1820

General & Commercial Directory of Leeds, 1826; Hall, Wm, woolstapler, 5 Queens Court, Call Lane: h..1 Blundell Place Sunny Bank, St James street

This all poses more questions...was Thomas the father or a brother. Are all the Williams the same person or is William, the son also involved. William, the father died in Leeds in 1828

From Leeds Intelligencer
1793 James Daniel, patent hat maker from Stockportopened a warehouse near Red Bull Inn Leeds
1794 Daniel Hall & co patent hat warehouse Briggate
1795 William Hall & co on the bridge (j Daniel was bankrupt in 1795)

Do you think that is Daniel (James) & Hall (William)  & co

or Daniel Hall & co (as one person named Daniel Hall & co)
...........................................................................

Then there is
http://www.londonancestor.com/kents/kents-h.htm

1794 Hall William, Hat maker, 18, Borough, Southwark London

Borough High street Southwark runs of London Bridge
