gloucestershire burial index for miserden
« on: Wednesday 04 July 12 20:01 BST (UK) »
on the 25 dec 1865 john shepherd age 32 is listed by the side it says london and then further over it has LND abreviated for london presumably. It has no headings on the columns. John was born in miserden.  Does anyone know if that column is where they died. *COMPLETED*

Hi Sue.

That information is headed "Place of abode" (London) and "City of abode" (LND) on the GFHS burial index CD. I imagine it will extracted from the column headed "abode" in the post-Rose's Act burial register.

I don't think it's necessarily where he died, rather where he normally resided. But it seems likely he would have been living in London and died there and then been brought back to Miserden for burial. It might be worth trying to get a look at the original entry to see if it's any clearer than what's in the index.

Any gravestone at Miserden that might give more details?

I see the family were in Cheshire in 1861 and Emily back in Cheltenham in 1871, so no clue to their whereabouts in 1865 there.

However, I do notice that the Glos FHS online BMD index http://ww3.gloucestershire.gov.uk/bmd/DeathSearch.aspx has a death which looks remarkably similar to your John:

SurnameGiven NamesAgeYear DiedDistrictRegister Entry
SHEPPARDJohn331865Cheltenham, Cheltenham41 260

Might he have been living in London but visiting in-laws in Cheltenham at the time he died?

Just checked www.freebmd.org.uk and that burial was December quarter, so that would still fit, potentially.

Hi Pete

Many thanks for you reply and information. We had not considered the death being other than London,so you have certainly given us "food for thought".I shall have to order the death certificate for more details.

So watch this space!
Thanks again and I am sorry if you have already received this reply( Im new to this site.)

One MAJOR caveat...

I just had a pang of conscience and decided to check the census. I found a John SHEPPARD married to a Hester living in Cheltenham in 1861, aged 29. I can't find him 10 years later but I think I found his son Alexander in an orphanage...

So, sorry, that Cheltenham death could be a complete red herring. Hope I haven't wasted £9.25 of your money!

Hi Pete

Not to worry,as we both know its an "occupational hazard"with family history!

It could well be a relation as I think there was a Cheltenham connection, so could turn out to be useful one way or another.
Thanks for the other info will try along that line afterwards.
