Trying to find out anything about my great grandfather John William Ray. He was living with my great grandmother Mary Caroline in Whiston Street Hackney,  and also 19 Dove Row Shoreditch.  They never married, but she put his surname on the 1911 census. They  had a daughter (my nanna) called Julia Caroline. I cannot find any trace of him prior to 1893. He died in the German hospital in 1908.Can anyone help?  He was born in Bethnal Green and I think he had 2 sisters.

Hi

For tracing purposes - the 1901 census shows he was born in 1848 or 1852

An Ancestry member notified a change to his birthyear on 1.4.2012

I have sent that member an email directing them to your post in case they have additional info for you

Looking at the 1901 amendments - it shows the surname as Brown.  I think Mary Caroline may have been Brown

I have found (I think) 2 of the older children on the 1891 census as Brown but living with separate sets of relatives whose surnames were neither Ray or Brown  -so no clues there unfortunately.

I am not 100% sure about those entries

Just a thought.
Julia's baptism  98.1898 St Stephen Haggerston has her birth as 26.2.1897 but more importantly John is a druggist.Wouldn't he have had to have some sort of qualification and registration for this even in 1898?

we thought the same thing about qualifications for being a druggist..but cant find him listed anywhere on that score.  Mary Caroline married Edward Brown in 1872.  1881 census living at Kings Square Shoreditch.  He was off the scene when she met John Ray.  That is why she is still a Brown on some of the census.  In the 1911 one she listed all her children under the name Ray. (No idea why!)  We think John was born in 1848  because we have his death certificate, and it says died aged 60 in 1908.  There is someone on Ancestry who is doing research into the Brown family, and we have been in touch, they do not have anything on John Ray either.  What I would like to find out is..was he married before he met my Great Nan? He was49 when my nan was born, so it is likely that he was married before. We feel like we are up against a brick wall! Grateful for any help.thanks.

hi jennifer..thankyou for your post. The info seems to fit, date wise...but I suppose we cant be really sure its actually our John Ray. I  must admit..its feasable...he surely must have   been married before!  I would like to think I have found him at last!   Would love to have found his parents..but maybe someone will come up with something. Thankyou for your help.
